perhaps we should scale back government subsidies of mediocrity and remove the bureaucratic bloat that is ill-informed, ill-equipped and ill-incentivized to determine what is the "right amount" and "right goals" of basic research.
despite popular beliefs to the contrary, private citizen donors and industry does indeed understand the value of basic research, and may even be better positioned to value it properly as a whole, despite the private interests of them on an individual basis.
