Most of my fellow devs are from a 3D modeling and design background and have a hard time understanding anything more than push and merge (using a GUI). I tried to explain them numerous time, but they just phase out after a couple of minutes.

Yeah, you become a better programmer. And if it is fun while you at it, it another win.

A lot of game developers have written a 'toy' game engine. A lot of embedded developers have written their own little OS. A lot of web developers have written a 'click this button to autogenerate web pages' tool. And so on.

Face it. You are just not that hot. Another X Compiler for Y. Great. Probably doesn't really work. Senior devs probably care more about that you can finish boring project or stack. Spend hours on some tiny thing and make it work.

It probably also depends on how you present those hobby projects. Instead of saying "Look, I am so cool!", you can say you use this as a means to become a better programmer.

Did you live like this for a period of more than 5 years? You just gave a snapshot from an ideal situation. Fact is, income is always less, spendings are always more. Don't know about the US, but in Europe living on minimum wage, trying to cut all costs, there is very little you can save.

Good analysis. I'd like to add the cost of change. At some point you will move places or change jobs. You will have periods of less income and more spendings. This adds up. A few months of saving evaporate.

Come on, this is a very narrow view of things. There are a lot of people that can't just quit their job and start their own business, because well, they don't have any savings or access to credit. The work-money trade could be very very unequal.

and there is not a serious place on earth that would let me touch their codebase.

If you have already a CS degree and you spend a couple months refreshing your memory, you would be amazed what codebases you can touch.

It should work on Kubuntu and X11, but I remember that the installation and configuration process (or at least the documentation) is a bit lacking. Make sure you also install the ibus-[input method] package. If you don't the ibus preferences still allows you to add a chinese/japanese input method, but it doesn't actually do anything. You might also want to restart your x11 session after that.

Anything below 60Hz in VR has a significantly increased chance of giving motion sickness due to latency.

I think there is a subtle difference between fps (avg) and latency. I would say that a 'stable' latency is always better than a high fps.

Try Guitar Hero / Rock Band with various audio / video latency settings. 10ms is obviously impactful, anything higher borderlines on unplayable, and even 5ms has a subtle impact increasing missing notes.

Do you mean that you set an additional latency for both video and audio? Or you delay only the audio by 10ms?

What about LC3? It was announced a year ago?

Real question, what do some people mean with native C++? Or stuff like react native? Seems like it just equals more performance / peels away an abstract layer.

I know QT is dual licensed for application development. How's the licensing here?

I started a new job before covid hit. Some other devs started to annoy me. Just those silly things many people have. Like sighing every other second and never ending chit chat. I mean, I can tolerate it. But WFH is so much better. I can wear pyjamas, scratch my sack, do short power naps.

I'm in hardware, so I still have to make trips to the office. Those are way more fun. And those trips turn into social events. It's like catching up with friends.

CircuitPython and MicroPython are great for hobbyists or if you need to prototype something quickly.

It becomes very limiting for bigger embedded applications. Is the chip and are all peripherals supported? Probably not.

Of course, why go through the troubles of putting in the extra hours, if there is no financial compensation or appreciation?

Personally, I would just optimize stuff or propose new features for a product if I would learn something/gain experience out of it.

So, let's say after COVID, people start getting back to their cubicles and continue to crank out office hours just as before. Except you, you continue working from home (after some convincing arguments to your boss/management that you are just as effective WFH). How long will you last? Do you coworkers get jealous (although that could have done the same).

There are a few FAANG-ish companies in my country that pay well. Besides those companies, it is really hard to get a good salary. Other companies top out at 60-80k EUR. And then you'll probably need a lot of experience. It is not hard to pass the whiteboard interviews, but if the senior devs only take home 80k, why would they give you more?

I'm looking for a job change. Purely for money. Anywhere in Europe is fine actually. I mean, looking at the US, how hard can it be to earn 80k EUR with a CS degree and a few years of experience.

As someone who's working in haptics, not in the adult industry, but in VR: What are most actuators like? Are they ERM's or LRA's or even VCA's?

Your interface is pretty generic. Vibrating and rotating at a certain amplitude it seems? Are there toys out there where you can also set both amplitude and frequency?
