Yes, there have been massive improvements. so much so that many people take these as a given. Here’s a small few off the top of my head: - power steering (most people would struggle to drive a car without it) - anti lock breaks - suspension systems - fuel injection - multi gear transmissions - airbags

Now that I think about it I’m not sure I’d put the change from gas to electric as more revolutionary than a number of these seemingly mundane improvements.

Each one of those could be an insurmountable challenge for most people. I’m glad you were (seemingly) able to pull through.

At this point React is mostly a jobs program. Whatever useful abstractions it initially provided has been eclipsed by bloat.

Please do. Having lost my dad somewhat unexpectedly I would have loved something like this. I have 2 kids now and think besides financial security, journals, letters etc might be one of the most valuable things I could give them. That way they know me whether I’m here to tell them or not

i lost my father a year ago, and was there as he passed away. society/hospice tells us that it brings comfort to the dying to be surrounded by family - who knows (and is the least i could do to support him after all he did for me). what i do know is that watching someone die is not for the faint of heart - its brutal. thank you for sharing your story and articulating/validating how i've been feeling about things. i wish you peace on your journey.

I’m curious if people with other legitimate obligations asked and received push back. I’ve seen employers make accommodations for religious, dietary, various family drama (sick parents/partners, death etc), working moms etc - you just have to ask.

Anecdote: my son is 3.5 and has effectively not been around other children since we left NYC in February. Prior to leaving he was beginning to have a friend group. A group of parents have tried to keep them in touch with FaceTimes etc but to this day he still asks when he can see his friends in real life. We’ve also noticed social regression - especially being afraid of people leaving, not sleeping regularly and random bouts of anger. I’ve heard from other parents who’ve experienced the same. So much happens at this age - learning how to deal with anger, learning how to deal with other kids and their feelings etc. I tend to be a more hands off parent than my wife but even I worry. I hope for the best but I worry.

I always thought this was the way to go. People routinely punch the numbers to figure out if they can 'afford' to have a child, why is it so strange to do the same for end of life?

That always struck me as odd, testing aptitude by memorizing others hard won knowledge.

Who could really solve these problems, error free, on the spot with no prior exposure to underlying concepts?!?

Around 2008, one of my first jobs out of college was working as a photo retoucher for a retail fashion company. One of our main tasks was placing 3rd party product shots on a neutral background so that the photography would look consistent. I was pretty good with it and had a few tricks up my sleeve (Photoshop Actions FTW!) but it was still pretty time intensive.

Even back then, I was fearful of making a career out of that job. At worst, my company could have offshored a lot of that work rather than paying full time benefits in NYC. And while there were a few plugins back then, they weren't this good.

I'm fortunate I was able to move my career in another direction, but I did work with some amazing people who knew PS/photography inside and out. A part of me is sad that these skills are increasingly obsolete.

I still don't understand why NYC gave up so much by way of incentives and subsidies. With things the way they are, seemingly Amazon needed NYC, way more than NYC needed amazon.
