The vaccine-hesitant people I know are waiting for the live attenuated virus and/or FDA approval...

Please show me where it lists the reasons for not vaccinating on the page you linked, as I only see numbers on whether or not people are vaccinated. As it stands, your claim has zero statistical evidence to back it up. In fact, your link has zero relevance to your claim in any way.

I have to agree. This is a clever way to catch criminals that doesn't particularly harm non-criminals. I'll take this over the anti-encryption campaign the FBI has been on for the past 10 or 20 years.

What's wrong with the feedback they get through traditional channels, though? There's already a GitHub issues page and the forums. There's no need to exfiltrate user data to figure out something they're already telling you.

On Smoking 5 years ago

This was my experience quitting drinking. Once I realized what it meant for my stability, both mental and financial, the upsides stopped outweighing the downsides and I lost all interest.

Still working on cigarettes.

IIRC you used to be able to make a bootable Windows stick on Linux simply by extracting the contents of the ISO onto a USB stick and marking it bootable. Is that still possible now that EFI is everywhere?

I use Ventoy on a 500 GB portable SSD. I have Windows 10, FreeBSD, and multiple versions of each distro on it just in case. It even works with TempleOS.

All it needs now is some way to keep persistent files and I'll never need another thumb drive to install an OS.

obsessive hunting for displays of anger and ruining people's lives over it

The man ruined his own life by being an absolute maniac. He has nobody to blame but himself, and to make it out to be a witch hunt is at minimum obtuse and at worst acting as an apologist for dangerous behavior. If throwing a printer at someone who's pleasantly introducing themself seems reasonable to you, please, I beg of you, never work anywhere. It's for everyone else's safety.

HN is particularly rabid about banning cars for some reason. I got absolutely mobbed by cyclists the other day when I said that there are legitimate reasons to use a car in a city, with someone even going as far as claiming my car is too big. When I pointed out that the cars he suggested as smaller alternatives were actually bigger than what I drive...nothing.

The anti-car movement is truly insufferable, because, at least online, it seems it's mostly spearheaded by people from Europe who have never seen how spread-out America is. I'm not about to bike 30 miles each way to work every day, rain or shine, and yet I get looked at as the villain for suggesting people stop going outside when the weather sucks.

Rant over. I hate people.

Not sending data to a major cloud provider is quickly becoming like producing your own electricity because you don't trust the grid will provide a stable frequency and won't go down.

What, you mean smart? A lot of data centers do exactly that. SevOne has at least five Bloom Energy H2 fuel cells that run the whole building because they can't afford any downtime.
