It would be interesting, to also compare the output of farmland practices. If higher input leads to higher output, demand can be met with less land.

The marketing director that started the meatless program said "The [meat] sausage will become the cigarette of the future". Sales were stagnating or declining. Sales in the meatless segment were low but increasing steadily and they entered that segment, convinced, that they could produce alternatives with broader appeal. For one year, they spent all their advertisment budget on the new meatless line.

Initially the target group was "reducers". The first products included a lot of egg protein, so vegans were not targeted at all. Somewhat surprisingly, they decided to launch the new line under their well-known and established brand. That probably prevented some marketing claims that may have been off-puting to their existing customers.

Generating readable C code was an important goal from early on. Parts of the linux kernel would have to be translated to Low*, which is the subset of F*, that can be extracted to C.

I guess there would be a new build step, that runs when code is checked in, to not burden everyone with all the new toolchain (F*, z3, karamel, maybe OCaml and more). While the generated C code can be read and understood by C programmers, changes to that part should be done in Low* and that may require changes to proofs in F* or to the extraction tool (karamel). That's a pretty big investment for a project like linux and I guess, any work in that direction will happen on forks for a while, before there is enough confidence that such changes are sustainable.

A good first candidate may be HACL* (https://hacl-star.github.io), a cryptographic library that is already used in several projects.

I never had this opportunity, but I don't see an ethical problem here. As a more realistic example (in my environment), I suggest dumpster diving. I think it would be okay, ethically, but I would not do it because it grosses me out in a way that vegan substitutes don't, and that feeling is not related to the dumpster part.

I may have to do some more introspection, but I honestly don't think, that my acceptance of vegan substitutes is based on a desire to harm animals.

I often come back to a local repository to change something and think, while I'm at it, I'll just `git pull` and end up with a non-working working directory. Surely I should know better, but I think it's also hostile to users, when the easy thing to do is often the wrong thing to do.

That article is a good example of the problem. It tells me `git rebase` is an easy thing to do but I better not use that distributed VCS to publish my work that way, where 'publish' probably also applies to different machines of mine.

As their name implies, carbohydrates consist of carbon and water (hydrogen and oxygen), hydrated carbon. Amino acids need at least nitrogen in addition, which in our digestive tract is probably already most abundantly found in amino acids. The microbiome does consume carbohydrates though, mostly those that are inaccessible to our digestive system.

I'm not an expert on this, but my guess is that by mass their most important products for us are short chain fatty acids. They might assist in breaking down some proteins that we lack enzymes for or modifying amino acids, but the absorption of amino acids happens mostly in earlier sections of our intestines, whereas the microbial biomass and activity increases towards the later stages of the gut.

Right, I should probably have written RDI or DV (or DRI?). Doses improved, but in Germany, I can still find multivitamins marketed specifically at vegetarians and vegans with 10ug of B12 (labeled as 400%) in the supplement aisles of supermarkets.

Even in pharmacies, I have to tell that the supplement may be my only source of B12 and that I know about the dosing. I reduce the frequency when I have other sources like toothpaste. I think it is worth to RTFM for something that is relevant for the rest of my life.

Teasing the crucial part: Relying on 100% RDA of B12 from a daily multivatimin will get you in trouble because that likely exceeds the capacity of your transport proteins in a single dose. For the less efficient "unassisted" absorption, you need to dose a lot higher.

Unless they invented a creative way to use pop3, it is not 'pull' in any reasonable sense, because you can only pull what has already been pushed. You can't even even select what to pull once more than one request is outstanding, because pop3 does not convey information beyond message size.

Also, you have to poll continuously, destroying the benefit of having something pushed over smtp.

Tizen could be a great OS if Samsung did not lock it down and enabled building from source. It is a lot closer to Linux than Android. I use it on a watch/fitness-tracker and the whole package would be great if the development was not hamstrung by Samsung.

You need to sign packages with a certificate you get from Samsung and tie it to your device ids for sideloading. For that, you need Tizen Studio, which is a custom outdated version of eclipse, depending on outdated versions of some external libraries. I tried it in a container, which worked fine, except for the signature generation. So I ran it in a sufficiently outdated VM.

Unfortunately, this developer cert will only get you so far and for the complete API, you need a partner level cert.

If you put up with all this, there's the documentation[0]. It takes ages to load and you can't easily download the damn thing, because they pull in the content via XHR. Why, Samsung, why?

Inherent to dairy production is regular impregnation and separating the calves. Just like the egg industry, market pressure favors more "productive" genetics, which results in males basically being discarded early in life, and shorter productive life with higher output for the females.

Increasing animal welfare(, for lack of a better term,) results in higher environmental impact, because slower growth, longer lives and less conversion, require more feed and produce more emissions. At least globally - locally, large-scale concentrated operations have a high impact.

I can speak for southern Germany where there are still many small farms in villages. Due to space constraints, those businesses have to extract as much as possible out of every animal. The text says that cows are tethered like this for months or even years (basically their whole life). It's estimated that this affects about 1 million or about a quarter of the german dairy cows. I think the Matrix would compare favorably to this.

I switched when I got my Advantage 2 QD. I used typing trainers for a couple of days to learn the positions and then it took a couple of weeks to get adjusted and not have to think too long.

Before that, I could not touch-type on QWERTY, but learned the Neo layout a couple of years back. I gave up on it because I was using too many other machines then. It felt more natural, but I think what really makes the difference for me is the keyboard. On the Kinesis, it is very obvious which finger to use for each key. I was a lot more confident in the physical mapping within days than after decades on standard staggered layouts. I wish there were ortholinear options for laptops.

Yes, that sentiment is highly unprofessional. 9x6 months translates to "that box is checked for reason" and "it's not going to change". Even if things are going to change, it's probably going to affect one function on your part and you are producing valid JSON anyway. Surely you can bill a fortune 500 company for a function to put things in order.

If you require serialized JSON in a specific order, you are not requiring JSON, but some dialect of JSON and that should be clearly communicated. If, for some reason, a client needed a special serialization, i'd ask them for a spec, because the JSON spec does not apply anymore, and be done with it.

You don't _need_ canonical representations for signing, but then you can't let go of the representation used for computing the signature. What is the argument against a requirement to only sign canonical data?

I've had both front airbags deployed in a compact car with closed windows. Impaired hearing on the right ear (left-hand drive car) was the only damage I took.

The implementations are disappointing so far. Devices that rely on some vendor internet service are unacceptable. At the very least I'd want a direct connection to the device with a documented API and documented behavior of the firmware. Ideally the firmware itself would (partially) modable. Some safety critical parts may be left inaccessible.

For example, I'd want cookware with temperature sensors and a pressure sensor in case of a pressure cooker, a controllable stove and oven with power monitoring, a kitchen hood wit gas sensors, etc.

What we can instead are gadgets with mobile apps, that are completely undocumented beyond the UI. Kitchen devices for the commercial sector have been somewhat smart for a while, but are a pain to program and again lack documentation.

IoT these days is paying a premium for vendor lock-in.

As the article pointed out, the hallmark here is the "Herxheimer reaction" or "detoxing" elsewhere. I'm not making a statement on endotoxin release one way or another, but one has to be very careful to apply reasoning that explains bad reactions to treatmens.

That's pretty much what I have been doing, when I was 19. But I became sick, saw a couple of doctors without a diagnosis and that prescrption would have sounded like: "Have you tried not being sick anymore?"

I had to wait for a NSAID to kick in to get down liquid food, had to sleep often, because I could only sleep for few hours at a time and everyday life was exercise enough. At that point blood tests for lyme were inconclusive, but the rheumatologist thought the symptoms warranted oral doxycycline, which cleared the symptoms within days. Maybe a lumbar puncture would have shown it, but I was asymptomatic before I was scheduled.

Like nosianu experienced, there was a long period where I thought, I just had to get my act together and it takes a while to conclude that something is seriously wrong. At some point, you take a doctor's educated guess, even if the treatment is harmful.

I'm not familiar with Rancilio, but it looks like the Silvia uses a group head that is at least compatible with ther professional machines. That gives access to a huge range of parts like filter baskets, tampers and also easy access to replacement parts like gaskets.

I inherited a consumer DeLonghi, that basically looks like most of their espresso machines and it's nothing like a professional machine. They use dual wall instead of single wall filter baskets, the steam wand differs a lot and my machine shoots a couple of jets of water into the coffee, preventing even extraction.

I did however happen to find beans that got decent results on that machine, so it's not like there's a strict total order of quality that leads to a one dimensional result. Professional machines are much more pleasant to work with, though.

I don't know if there is a definition of honest accounting that I should be aware of. It is incorrectly quoting UK Music, which did the dishonest accounting.

If they were engaged in lobbying related to the copyright directive, they most certainly would not align with google's interests. If you take a look at the transparency register (http://ec.europa.eu/transparencyregister/public/consultation...), you'll find that almost their entire budget for the declared activities comes from two german federal agencies.
