I enjoyed reading this, thank you for sharing. When you say you tried to contact the admin of the box and that this was common back then, how would you typically find the contact info for an arbitrary client's admin?
I have no feedback that hasn't already been mentioned elsewhere. I just want to say that I love this. Your son is developing a passion for programming very similar to how I did so at his age. Seeing it happen as an adult is fascinating and brings back memories. Also, both your challenge tasks and instruction about resources (Google and AI) were spot on and seemed well heeded. Lots to be proud of here :)
Do you know of anywhere I could learn more about this? Googling "old sparky" just yields articles about electric chairs, even when including keywords such as "rheostat" and "theatre"
I've been wondering about things like this for a while. I run hot and sleep much better in cold temperatures (looking forward to cold winter nights). A weighted blanket helps, but I'll definitely look into the chili pad and bed jet. Thanks for mentioning!
In case anyone else was wondering why in the world anyone needs a smart mattress; it has both heating and cooling capability, as well as vibration (for alarms). Presumably it is programmable via an app and, of course, collects usage data. Sounds like a really nice product if it weren't for the privacy issues.

I didn't downvote you. I don't even have the ability to downvote on HN yet. I just interpreted the parent comment differently and thought the different perspective could help provide context. Especially since I was similarly surprised at the idea that someone would prefer mandatory return to office

I think it's likely they were literally referring to the economy rather than return to office, considering WeWork stands only to lose when employees work from their employer's office

I have definitely noticed and been frustrated by what you're calling out here. There always has to be something to work on, even if that thing might invalidate a significant amount of previous effort or cause regression. As a developer myself, I guess it is good for me, because it means job security. And maybe that's why there's always something to be added or changed or re-created on the products I've helped develop - to ensure all the individual contributors have something to keep them busy. But it definitely is frustrating that it seems like an app being called "done" is extremely rare nowadays. Though I suppose developers didn't really have the choice to continue development indefinitely back before the internet allowed "miscellaneous bug fixes and feature updates" patches to be pushed weekly.
Edit: I just noticed who I was replying to. Thanks for your work on Cydia and in the iOS jailbraking scene at large. I have lots of fond memories jailbraking and installing all kinds of weird tweaks on my iPhone 4 back in the day.
That's fascinating, I've never heard of hard drive data recovery using liquid nitrogen. Is the idea that the lower temperature prevents the drive from overheating long enough to recover the data? Sounds very cool.

How do you care for a garden spider over winter? The yellow garden spider (argiope aurantia) is probably my favorite spider and I love when one takes up residence in my garden throughout the warmer months. I never considered caring for one when it gets too cold outside and then releasing it when it warms up.

I don't mind it as much in true crime podcasts when it's done well. Totally agree that the generic "it was a peaceful town where nobody locked their doors blah blah blah" can get old quickly. But hearing about the unique lives of the victims in murder cases can definitely add to the story. And in podcasts more focused on the investigative side (ex. Someone Knows Something) knowing the background info can even be critical to solving the puzzle so to speak.
