Grid scale electrical storage technology is not even developed, let alone remotely cost competitive, but it is a prerequisite for actually realizing any of the benefits of wind and solar.

We're at least a generation (~25 years) too early and unfortunately the least fortunate among us will bear the cost of our delusions.

The demand for gas is increasing because the wind isn't blowing as much as they thought it would. You still need the entire fossil generation system as a backup for renewables for when the sun doesn't shine and wind doesn't blow. Until there is grid scale electrical energy storage, renewables simply increase the cost of the whole system.

Given the drastically falling costs of renewable energy...
