Until recently, my picture was of me while running a marathon, since I thought that would be the most non-threatening photo available. However, I recently had a reservation (for a nearly 2-week-stay) cancelled by the host shortly after booking. I'm now suspicious enough of her justification that I've decided to remove the photo entirely and let my uneventful trip history speak for me.

Having worked on getting a Sharia-compliant investment fund set up a few years back, what I recall is that interest ("riba") is specifically forbidden. However, there are structures that can provide the same cash flows as interest but aren't technically interest: example, instead of paying interest on a 30-year mortgage, you just buy the property from the lender in installments over 30 years, etc.

Not everyone who disagrees with you is automatically a troll. Why not provide more support for your argument instead?

In the past, I haven't seen much about how the "last feet" problem will be addressed in dense metropolitan areas. In multi-unit dwellings, often the wiring is still owned by the provider. So, even if you were to run fiber (municipal or otherwise) right up to the doorstep of a building, you wouldn't be able to cheaply run drops to every unit. In my previous readings, the laws in my area at least allow for provider "abandonment" or a buyout of the wiring, but I doubt those would help very much. I'd be interested in hearing if folks have seen otherwise, however.

The problem is, if the filename/URL is unique to the user like "spammersite.tld/images/50093825343.jpg" and 50093825343" is tied to my unique email, then on Gmail's download and caching of the image, they've validated my email. If another email has 023503850485.jpg, gmail wouldn't know that the underlying file is the same unless it loads it. I don't even have to have checked my mail for this to happen.

I'm curious if this will help spammers. AFAIK, loading a tracking pixel helps validate an email address as active (since, by design, bounce messages probably wouldn't make it back to the spammer), even if the recipient didn't otherwise respond to the message. AFAIK, "Validated" email address lists are worth more than unchecked lists and if Google is preloading images for valid accounts, then that seems to make validation even easier for spammers.

My mother bought an LG flatscreen, but I had to show her how to use it. A gyroscopic remote? Ads in her TV menu? Using the system was painful even for me and I fully expect that the software will not be updated two years from now. I guess the manufacturers feel they have to be able to point to something unique or different, even if it doesn't actually provide any value (like "Collectors Edition cereal boxes") and that idea gets in the way of focusing on core strengths/"less-is-more".

I bought the predecessor as well and you're absolutely right: the design is lovely. While I'd say it's more of a full-featured HID than a remote it's well designed and comfortable to use. I didn't know about the new one and I'll keep an eye out for it.

A problem I see is that the tasks of set-top-boxes and displays are relatively constrained, so having a reduced input device seems like a good idea. But how to support free-text searching without a full keyboard (on-screen menus are painful) or having to deal with limited battery life due to a touchscreen?

That's interesting: the remote was one of the two reasons I ditched my Boxee (the second being that the UI was painful). Initially, the keyboard was a major selling point for me over my AppleTV remote but grey text on black rubber buttons? No backlight? Trying to use the keyboard functionality of the remote in anything other than full lighting was an exercise in futility.

To be fair: UI (virtual and physical) is hard. Thus far, the AppleTV is my favorite but it's a "lesser of two evils" scenario.
