While agreeing with where you're coming from, including this, it is also worth nothing that there is truth to what you're rejecting as well. Our longstanding unsolved domestic problems are fertile ground for nation state competitors to foment discontent, gain oppositional mindshare, and ultimately harm our overall position. The elites seem to think these problems can just be ignored or swept under the rug, when in reality the frustration grows until it boils over into highly destructive self-owns. We're already seeing this actively play out on a grand scale with general politics, but it can certainly happen in more specific ways that target things like data centers.

To be industrially competitive we need to fix our longstanding domestic problems that fall on individuals, rather than merely ignoring them. In the case of data centers - lack of effective environmental regulations around air and sound pollution, complete inability for municipalities to regulate the operations of something after it's been built, and a shortage of infrastructure that's now been privatized for use by the highest bidder.

Plus that general affordability crisis you touched upon, of course. Nobody likes the feeling that an appendage of a trillion dollar company can come to their city, wave around the promise of everything-bubble money, and make it so their own individual voice is meaningless.

But sure, IFF you had an instance where an amount transferred was wrong and their various settlement/accounting tallies didn't catch it, and the bank refused to look into and fix it on their own, and you had a reason to believe they used a paper form for that, then yes you would have a good argument that could be used in court!

Oh damn. I had just gone up one level from your first link (to https://openwrt.org/toh/mikrotik/start) and saw a small list of 4. RB450 was on there (which I used to run), so I figured it was mostly accurate.

That table is a much longer list! Still no love for my CRS/CSS, but it does look like that's probably most of the RB devices that Mikrotik actually intends for use as routers (rather than L3 switches).

There are legitimate frustrations behind reactionaries' anger. Even if you don't personally share them, it would behoove you to understand them. The Tea Party era is when the movement really started listing towards populist-expedience-grift, but that doesn't automatically indict its leaders per se - especially if they're now on a topic you might care about.

Four devices is not "most". You had me excited that I might be able to abandon the proprietary UIs on my CRS326/CSS326. And I know those aren't the "real router" devices, but Mikrotik certainly refers to them as routers.

"Hold up in court" as in was it duly executed and filed by a certain date, regardless of the time and extra management required for the bank's performance? Yes, why not.

"Hold up in court" against someone claiming it was an unauthorized transfer? Even without the bug, that can be contested in many straightforward ways!

But unless there is a specific legal claim that hinges on the bug being significant, it's pretty irrelevant "in court". I knew about this precisely because the transfer failed to go through due to redundancy - one digit in account numbers is generally a check digit, plus account titles and whatnot.

In general you can always challenge the validity of scanned documents, regardless of known software bugs or not! Just like you can always challenge that a paper document is a forgery. You need a specific argument and some evidence though!

I am pretty sure I was bitten by this bug, or a similar bug, on an IRA transfer form that I uploaded to a bank. On the scan that I uploaded, one digit in the account number was a clean "5", but the customer service person said it looked like a good clean "6". I presume their document management system was an outcropping of a system originally set up for dealing with faxes, and used that or a similar compression algorithm.

Bingo. I use Mikrotik for my switches. They were the first I found that had 10Gb uplinks, inexpensively and with low power usage. L2 configuration is janky (like every other switch) but workable. I use both SwOS and ROS, but moving towards ROS for dot1x (unfortunately inescapable to have that functionality on the switch).

But the actual router? That lives on NixOS in a virtual machine on a generic amd64 machine that also runs NixOS. I'd rather design / perfect my config once in terms of iproute2/nftables and know I can swap in any hardware. I've got a full policy routing setup that let's me define for each device what Internet horizon it can see (along with what other local devices it can access).

I also find the sibling comment mentioning routing speed to be funny. I've found that unencrypted gigabit WAN is easily handled by most amd64 computers. 10Gb LAN->LAN hairpin routing seems fine. But the big thing is doing gigabit OpenVPN/wireguard, which off the shelf hardware-accelerated routers just don't really do unless you spend a lot. (coupled with the above policy routing, I can configure things like this particular web browsing VM goes out a data center IP that rotates every day).

Wireless APs are similarly handled by hostapd on NixOS, driving (mostly) Mikrotik MiniPCIe Wifi cards. I don't really need the latest and greatest wifi gen, rather I just need them to work and be as maintenance-free as possible.

The problem is that going back to "normal" would require either Republican voters (en masse) to accept what a terrible mistake they've made, or for the Democratic establishment to stop being the "good cop" stasis option still controlled by corpos. And neither one seems likely.

We'd have a chance with ranked pairs voting, which would naturally allow competing options to gradually gain support rather than the current two party duopoly. But getting that to be implemented would also require one of the above.

Yes, as a libertarian I was certainly quite frustrated with bureaucratic authoritarianism. But with autocratic authoritarianism now looming over us, and a bunch of people cheering it on because it seems new and exciting, I most certainly have become much more conservative!

As for data centers, I'm not against them in principle - I'm sitting ten feet away from my own rack [0]. But with the way the legal environment is set up - once something is built it becomes basically impossible to regulate - combined with the vice signalling federal executive that is likely to focus one of its two minute hates on your community if you do manage to succeed at regulating operations, it's simply best to just not give this industry a foothold in your own community. And while this is most certainly a selfish position (I'm happy to use data centers hosted elsewhere), it's all we have until we restore the equitable rule of law.

Directionally, humans want stability before trying to create offspring. This is the whole r/K selection thing. And even though what constitutes stability is going to vary wildly based on culture, expanding the scope to "present & past" is more of an exploration in what constitutes that stability rather than a repudiation of the main point.

And what do we get for it? Cops that think they are in the military, acting as a hostile occupation force and killing our own citizens. Their personal urges should have led them to put up (join the actual military) or shut up (don't). Instead they were given an easier and safer option that requires all of the bravado of shooting fish in a barrel, so they took it.

I have no desire to deal with gas in my home, and my state exempts homeowner electrical.

I think the bigger issue is that the market doesn't really value renovation much any more - it's quite content with beige and builders' grade! And the low-effort fashions change so often you're never going to win that game on DIY timescales. So it's not so much sweat equity any more, but rather sweat comfort and convenience.

I guess nobody can know anything and there is no point in trying to look at the typical experiences of generations, since we can never know if someone is just making up a sob story about what are actually their just deserts. (/s)

FWIW the traditional path for renovations was to add "sweat equity" by doing the work yourself, slowly and without permits. You can still do this today, perhaps even more effectively than previously with Youtube videos/LLMs. Although you might need to hire more "handymen" to replace what would have been bartered labor with friends/family (tying back to the social capital concept of the article).

I agree there is a strong thread of dignity, and lost dignity. But what I see is one of the main dynamics is they think Grump is going to restore their dignity. Any bit of their current situation that chafes against their sense of dignity is written off as a product of the Other. eg "Our streets are ruined because of the socialist liberals". If they connect it to war, it's the previous war by the other guy. In their mind, Grump is going to fix those streets some time as part of a longer plan. There is no connecting the billions of dollars recently spent on war to how it could have been directly spent on infrastructure instead.

Every thing that Dear Leader smashes or steals supports their dignity - because it shows Dear Leader is powerful, and Dear Leader is their leader, so his glory reflects on them. He speaks to them, telling them how special they are. What matters is not the effects from institutional damage 10-20 years out, but rather the immediate high from the wanton destruction.

The strongest instance of reality-in-their-faces I can think of is Alex Pretti. Here is someone who should check all of their boxes to empathize with - blue collar, white, male, gun owner, directly helping a fellow human. Summarily killed in a gangland-style execution by a group of government-empowered thugs. Their alarm bells should be going off - this could just as easily happen to me, a massive impingement on their dignity [0]. But yet the rationalizations abound for why Pretti should be slotted into the Other camp, and how such a thing could never happen to Them. And while there seemed to be some reflection and processing after this incident, it was more of a speed bump than any sort of rude awakening.

Never mind the countless other victims that only match their identity-archetype 80%, or less, and are thus written off in a heartbeat.

(also, and this is a tangential point that I don't want to dominate our conversation: given the strong reaction against the use of the F-word doesn't it seem like the characterization directly chafes at their dignity? they want to believe they are supporting some new and glorious revolution, rather than the same pathetic dead-end pattern we've seen before)

[0] I think this may be bumping up against the left vs right conception of dignity a bit, wherein the rightist view being killed isn't undignified per se. But it's hard for me to tell how much this is a real divide, and how much is just more rationalization. Presumably they wouldn't feel that way about their own child dying, even if "they are in a better place".
