I hope so. We were considering migration from on premise to AWS or GCP. Did a couple of simulations, went with renewing hardware for our on premise. It was the right choice. Storage alone is almost 3 times more expensive on cloud, compared to a netapp appliance with financing... Stil using GCP for couple of use cases (e.g. BigQuery, Vertex), some backup infra, but 95% works on our hardware in rented racks.

Well, multiple processors mean multiple CPU's, not multiple dice. For example as Dell R840 series, 4xXeon 28 Cores, or R7625, 2xEpyc 96 Cores. I absolutely understand that these are specialised machines for specialised workloads. OTOH Mac Pro in rack mount is not necessary mainstream system as well, and with current approach it maxes out at 24 cores / 196GB RAM or if they somehow double it in a year or two at 48 Cores / 512 if you're lucky.

Well, no, they didn't. I understand the idea behind M1/2Ultra. However, it's not exactly the same. Can they put 4 of these dice? And 8? Currently it maxes out at 24 cores per machine, in a rack mounted chassis. That is nothing near what I can get with EPYC based servers. And there I can have multiple processors in a machine.

Interesting, only single CPU. I was thinking, that for Mac Pro they will go somehow with multiple processors and some magic with shared memory access solved in OS. Interesting though, how the external GPU support will look like if you have PCI and if it will be expanded to the TB4 as well.

I use it and it's quite effective. I just paste text I want to summarise and just ask (GPT-4) to "Create Anki cards for these paragraphs. Keep the answers brief". It does quite a good job in distilling the knowledge.

I find that Anki, by showing up the cards at certain (optimised) intervals, delivers distributed practice. Out of the efficient learning methods as evaluated by this paper: "Improving Students’ Learning With Effective Learning Techniques: Promising Directions From Cognitive and Educational Psychology" [1] (scroll to Table 4 for results) Anki delivers both distributed practice and practice testing in a very natural way.

I find Anki essential for language learning. Did it for French, starting from 0 and finishing at B2 (except for writing) in two years (also taking a 3h / week course).

Especially at the very beginning, I find learning the first 500 words as described in "Fluent Forever" very helpful. Going through that before starting with the course makes the experience much easier.

I totally agree with Krashen's theories, but using Anki is a secret weapon here that puts the process on overdrive (e.g. reading on Kindle and then later going through words that I checked in the Kindle dictionary and adding them into Anki).

Also, it's essential to retain the knowledge, e.g. if it's a language that you don't use daily.

5 years and 30'000+ cards later, I find Anki indispensable in learning anything which requires memorisation. Thinks I have to learn for work, for hobbies, certificates, improving my vocabulary in languages I care about. Basically, every fact I care about strongly enough, goes into Anki. If not enough, goes into Obsidian.

Last year I finally put my old 2012 13" MBP to rest. I have been using it for 8 years for work, commuting with it to work. 8 years of plugging it in and out at the office and at home. Then it was used by my daughter for another two years for home school during the pandemic, Zoom + Chrome. 10 years of daily usage. Could not ask for better machine. After that brief period with 2016 15" MBP and now base M1 Pro that I plan to use for at least another 3 years at least. Sure, HDD upgrades would be nice, but I can live with the Transcend card in the SD Card slot as an expansion for file storage.

Every now and then I think about getting second-hand X1 carbon as a machine I don't need to care about when travel. But then again, MBP + iPad Pro with universal control works so well it's like having a second screen on the go. I don't think there's another system that be near this level of integration.
