Because English is the only language of merit? And doing everything in only English isn't snobbish?

Agreed. As someone who spends most of their time on performance related issues, it's important to keep in mind that sometimes performance issues are strongly tied to the architecture of the program. If the data structures aren't set up to take advantage of the hardware, you'll never get the results you're hoping for. And setting up data structures is often something that needs to be thought about at the beginning of the project.

IMO unless you have a very specific field in mind which you believe will be extremely interested in your skills 3-5 years from now, I'd say "Hell no."

I say this as someone with a PhD (and as someone who's field quickly became irrelevant only a few years after graduation).

I feel like the way C++ is going, it's getting around to doing what Java did better ten years ago. This article seems to be describing a (still verbose) C++ version of a Java Interface. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've spent the last four years learning the art and craft of LED art. I suppose I wouldn't change the way that I do things, but if I were starting out again I'd definitely use this. I can very much appreciate all of the work that this system takes off of my hands. The auto-recompile low-iteration-time is key. Very impressive!

I'm surprised at that amount of surprise in this thread. I have a good friend who is (was) in sales. He had to get out once he realised that he'd turned into a full-blown alcoholic and that he'd wouldn't be able to do business if he at all tried to slow down. Heavily dependent on the industry though.
