If Valve really wanted to release HL1/GoldSrc source code, they could re-base to the GPL quake source code and release their changes as GPL as well. Something that I don't think is taught enough is that it's very, very difficult to beat the market. If someone is asking you for money and promising that they'll beat the market, alarms should be ringing in your brain. A common ploy is to start up a dozen funds, let them run for five years, then pick the most successful one - look, our fund beats the market! Invest with us! Five years of returns, we're proven! It's a scam. Past performance does not indicate future returns.

This is to say that your idea isn't bad, it's just that if someone had a strategy to beat the market they'd be using it already, and other investors would be looking for a way to screw over that person and leave them holding the bag. That's why passive investments are diverse and fairly low risk - they should ideally track the whole market rather than trying to pick winners and losers. Index funds are good for this.

I was looking into something similar because I wanted to test a local model for doing basic coding and smart model (deepseek) for planning.

It's basically not possible with claude code, the api endpoint is a single environment variable and whatever models are on that endpoint are what's available.

HOWEVER, if you run a proxy like LiteLLM, you can configure it to send requests to different api endpoints on the back end and expose them as different "models" on the front end, then configure claude code to switch between those virtual models.

I have claude code hooked up to deepseek, I hooked up my spare cheapo android tablet, installed adb and fastbook with my package manager and asked the AI to jailbreak the tablet.

It discovered the tablet was running a unisoc t606, found a CVE from a couple years ago, and unlocked the bootloader for me. I was the meat puppet holding the "volume up" button and plugging in the usb cable a bunch of times. Like most of my experiences with this stuff, it was pretty eerie.

Next step for me is to attempt mainline linux, there seems to be some postmarketOS devs playing with it. We've probed most of the tablet's hardware except the exact display.

My first IT job in the late aughts we had a small windows utility that came packaged in a zip file rather than an installer, and we wanted to deploy it across the network. I figured out what registry keys the .exe needed and created a NSIS installer that could be run silently, quickly, and remotely - fun stuff.

I was a VB6 user back in the 90s, I think there's a bunch of reasons:

- Microsoft killed it: "let's rewrite the entire thing as VB.NET and make it completely different"

- The UIs designed in the RAD weren't particularly responsive in the sense of "responsive design" - generally you couldn't resize a window and have all the elements resize correctly. When I learned Java Swing and elements were defined programmatically as percentages of their container that was kind of eye opening to me.

- The small-time apps that were being developed with VB6 in the 90s are basically all web apps now.
