The truth is that I (and probably other users) don’t always have the luxury of choice and a large portion of commercial codebases have a very large number of files. Sometimes, it is multiple codebases at once with a very large number of files .

I don’t want to enter and exit a cli tool in order to increase and decrease the volume . Ideally it’s a control in the top right or a keyboard mapping . What if something loud begins playing in a browser tab and I have to change the volume quickly?

There are a few nice to haves that would really help me out with making an open bsd transition. I thought of writing them myself because I am getting very fed up with Linux for the above reasons.

- IDE support is an issue still

- Filesystem challenging when using a laptop that runs out of battery

- MATE lacking volume and WiFi controls

- This one is just me being picky but a GUI to help me gain a better understanding of the security settings or alternatively more up to date books.

- I am not exactly sure on how to correctly use virtualization and I need it to support docker workloads at work

Its a lot worse than this in terms of AWS cost for apps that often barely any people use. They're often incorrectly provisioned and the AWS bill ends up in the hundreds of thousands or millions and could have been a few thousand in bare metal on Hetzner with a competent sysadmnin team. No, its not harder to administer bare metal. No, its not less reliable. No, its not substantially harder to scale for most companies to do bare metal(large fortune 50 excluded).

I was doing web development in 2006 and that's not how it was. Websites were not all in i-frames and they were not all insecure. Setting up a PHP dynamic website with Apache does not have to be insecure and didn't have to be back then, either.

This is the reason. I logged in to basically say the same thing. I used to be this way, and give opinions, but you cause problems over time that ends up with you getting disciplined in subtle ways or fired.

The homeless shelter situations in the bay area have waitlists. Some of the encampments also have waitlists (!). A lot of the homeless actually work in the bay area, some of them far away. Being in line in time to get a spot on a shelter is a task by itself and can be mutually exclusive with working. There is so much at play here you do not understand well. If we assume you are well meaning, you need to know that some politicians are not telling the truth about the true state of things.

You have no idea what is going on in the bay area homeless situation. I am not discounting your experiment, which was very interesting, but you cannot apply your experiences to the bay area homeless situation.

You have to define "worse". What is actually "worse" is paying developer time to sit there in a never-ending upgrade and deprecation cycle when your core product is elsewhere.

Gen 1 wasn't Gen1. Gen1 for dynamic websites was a lamp stack with yolo javascript in the php header. Then people really started using jQuery because targeting a bunch of browsers at the time was a huge incompatible mess, along with other tools like modernize.js . Then your gen 1 started in earnest, if I remember correctly.

I remember the divisions slightly differently . There seemed to be a core movement from Ember.js and backbone onto Angular. Then from angular to react. Now I am seeing some movement off of react onto alternatives like Vue and Svelte, but almost everyone still is using react. Most shops have issues with the React part of their stack. It's still hard to get buy in for the alternatives in production. No one is using web assembly or even knows what a web component is.

I disagree about the comment about not going wrong with either. This assumes you or your team have the time to maintain the stack with the large amount of dependencies, as there are security patches often and deprecations often. It's a waste when it seems like a large portion of the actual market is just creating dashboard products. You can handle this with a much lighter frontend if you can get buy in (you can't).

I am not sure this is true . As I wrote elsewhere, almost everyone wants a web app or thinks that they have a web app, but usually it is just a dynamic website. You do not need to build up a framework to have a dynamic website.

Everyone thinks they have a web application but a lot of the React I get asked to build could have easily just been a dynamic webpage (it is usually a dashboard). I think there is an over-emphasis on what constitutes a "web app".

Alright, I've been in the industry a very long time but moved to backend when it got complex. I am wondering why you need a decent hash map or set implementation. This is supposed to be done on the backend. The frontend is for presentation. Your backend should not give you elements with duplicates (why you don't need set). "Decent hash map" sounds like you just don't like the hash map implementation because you are trying to do something complex with the Map implementation, in which case it belongs on the backend.

So, I read this article and have to disagree with this point that people in very remedial math classes have cognitive issues .

I can think of so many exceptions to this that I have personally encountered. Its usually because of poverty or home schooling and often isnt the fault of the student. I know someone that is far more intelligent than I (I went to a top 3 cs school and have had a very successful career). This person can't do basic math because they were never given the opportunity to learn it. There are also people that are perfectly intelligent, but messed up really badly when they were younger. They should have the opportunity to turn things around.
