Correct, what RFC2317 brings you, is an example of you creating a new namespace in some structured format (IIRC, there are three different example formats given in this RFC), and you just have the upstream ISP, which has the reverse delegation done on the zone cut boundary for the IP ranges it controls inserting a CNAME out to your new namespace on nameservers you control for the reverse PTRs so the reverse PTRs can be formed that way.

Running a long time ISP, I found extremely few customers wanting to do something like RFC2317, or could actually figure out and do it effectively. Almost all were content with control panel/API and having the ISP do it after I pointed them to this informational RFC asking them if this is what they wanted.

Note, the CIDR RFC didn't come out until Sep 1993. Thus even brand new network equipment in the mid 1990's were still very classful. And even then, knowledge of how to properly use /etc/netmasks in SunOS v4.x (or the equivalent if some other network stack even had one) was very scarce.

In the mid 90's, SMBs connecting to the Internet would have very typically obtained a /24 from their ISP, and had direct connection online, no firewalls, barely any proxy servers (although that was popular for some mid sized customers that would have needed multiple /24s or even a /16 to get all their workstations online).

It wasn't until the company Network Translation, with the PIX came about that anybody even considered doing private IP address in general as a firewall strategy with NAT translation using private IPs. And then it took years and years to become popular. Long bought by Cisco at that point.

I don't think Cisco IOS even had NAT until something like 10.2, when it was a premium license package.

For a very long time, Juniper lead over Cisco for performance and features. After the run of the original Catalyst switches, Cisco was floundering, resting on their past successes without really pushing anything.

We bought Juniper gear at the time because nothing Cisco had would work well for us. At least at not any sane price point, and lots of restrictions/gotchas.

Cisco finally got their wind back eventually on their Nexus gear, catching up and run neck-and-neck between Juniper & Arista now.

I've stopped buying books from Amazon as _every_single_one_ comes with the corners dinged, the covers scratched, and often times bent in half one way or the other.

If I happen to want a self-published-printed-by-amazon book (ie. not available at any other store), I'll really think twice about it, as the quality is probably total crap. The last one I got had screenshots that were all unreadable (and the main content was mostly in the screenshots, without explaining text otherwise), and looked like it was printed at about 15 dpi.

OOTH, I've never had problems with BN or Bookshop.

They've announced NSX and SD-WAN is a core business unit under the new VMware as Broadcom offering.

EUC, Aria and Carbon Black are still up in the air.

I haven't had any trouble installing VMware security patches (I've done plenty).

As to why there seems to be such an increase in security patches, its like the quote from Willie Sutton. That's where the money is.. The largest target gets the most attention.

Everybody has bugs. While you may hide under the radar with using some lesser known things, don't fool yourself thinking that there aren't holes the hackers can weave their way through.

Hyper-V as most people actually use it is more like single-host VMware ESXi.

VMware's true magic is with vCenter. While Microsoft has an equivalent to that (SC VMM), nobody seems to use it because it is virtually unusable. I've never seen a successful production cluster of VMM running.

IPv4 today is a totally different paradigm than what IPv4 was in the 1980's and early 1990's.

IPng (IPv6) was designed when the original paradigm existed, not what we have now-a-days.

So, if we actually had been on track to do IPv6 in the decade it was defined, we could have gone a totally different way. Instead due to the rapid growth of the Internet in the mid 90's, IPv4 was morphed into something different and IPv6 had its own model until we started to need it again.

Intel's servers are usually OEMed to some other maker taking Intel's design and using them as the basis of their solution.

The Intel case is pretty recognizable, and I see it time and time again with various vendors hardware kit.

In downtown Minneapolis, the whole of downtown is on computer controlled traffic light grid, so the crosswalk buttons don't change any of the timing of the traffic light grid.

But on all the ADA upgraded intersections, the crosswalk buttons DO start announcing the count down time, and what intersection they are at.

So, they do something, but they won't change the time it takes the light to actually change.

I've bought printed books on demand on Amazon, the first week they were released, (so not like a pirate had any time to duplicate it); that had horrendous print quality, super low quality screen caps (like 35dpi).

Its so I rethink my decision to have a printed tech book if the author only produces it as an Amazon print-on-demand title. Such that when I find a tech book that I want to read, I generally search elsewhere for it first, and if Amazon is the _only_ vendor that has it, I assume it is an Amazon print-on-demand text, and reconsider if I should buy it because I know I'll just be disappointed in crap quality.

SACD, HD-Audio, Blu-Ray Audio.

I own music only discs in each of these formats. I think the last Blu-Ray Audio disk I bought (Yello Point Dolby Atmos release) was shipped in 2021.

Granted, they are fairly sparse. That disc was an import.

Novell users at the time 4.0 came out had no clue what a Directory was, and why they should use it. They were quite used to v3.11, and everybody turned their back on v4.0 as too complex, totally unneeded, and why bother.

By the time Microsoft AD came around, there were actual uses for Microsoft AD, and plenty of buy-in.

I think licensing was a huge factor in Microsoft winning.

Microsoft's license was soft, and depending on the customer buying enough paper to cover, if you could even find a reseller that could describe how to properly license Windows Server (exteremely doubtful).

OOTH, Novell's licensing was a hard limit. Once that # of workstations logged in, those without a license were hosed.

On all the jobs I did in those days, Novell networks at each customer site _never_ had enough licenses to cover every workstation. There was always somebody left out and they had to go bug people to see if they were done with the network so they could get in their tasks. Nobody ever seemed to overprovision their licenses to cover every single workstation (or even to have extra).

I never met a company using Microsoft server that properly had their CALs licensed, and they didn't want to hear it from me. Finding somebody to sell you the proper CALs was an interesting exercise.

Most other network server OSes at the time (the Unix vendors were trying hard in this space in those early days too) also had hard licenses. Which was part of why they didn't gain traction at all.

My two cents running a small to mid-sized email server service.

I do have a global block list based on certain gTLDs.

The list isn't one chosen at random based on the long list of gTLDs out there, but based on real time feedback from my honeypots, and my customer feedback reports, so SPAM getting through the other filtering techniques in use, usually with zero false positives on them.

Many of the gTLDs that are abused the most are ones that had fire sales in the past to get them off the ground.

As mentioned in other replies, .xyz is a SPAMers wasteland. That one would cause the most difficulty getting through anything.

The others that made my block list are probably not ones you would guess.

So, I wouldn't be too worried about things in general. None of the large providers do blocking on gTLD. Only a few smaller ones do. If the domain was sold for $1 getting-off-the-ground, it could have been picked up by the SPAMers cheaply for quick turnaround and abuse.

Some self-checkouts are really slow and sucky.

I can scan things faster than the register can take it. It gives me a beep, I move on. Then I see the register is missing items, and getting out of sync with the scale function. Most things I buy are light-weight, so the computer decides to just fudge it and move on. (And if you notice after the fact that you've moved it onto the belt, you can't take it back, the system will hang and block you from going on until you put it back).

I'm not trying to steal, just their hardware can't keep up, and I'm not going to slow down to watch to make sure every beep corresponds to a successful item rung up.

I've noticed this too. It definately is by product.

Since I buy lots of weird stuff, my delivery times are all over the place. Some items can be obtained same day (if I buy enough $$), or overnight. Some "Prime" sales can take a week to ship.

I also see different geo areas get targetted for certain days. Like my home address tends to get things Wednesday and weekends. My office building gets things on Fridays, and Amazon knows enough that weekend delivery doesn't work.

So to me, it seems like they are aiming for an "average", keep certain things close, make people happy with real short delivery, but if you get weird stuff, you are probably going to be less happy overall with longer shipping delays.

At the time, video games seemed to be overly saturated, the marketplace was way down in sales and yes, people didn't know if video games were a passing fad or not. Computers were still more a hobbiest item rather than a thing everybody had.

As someone that does run an ISP and helps run an IXP, it matters nothing to me if somebody has a 32-bit ASN vs a 16-bit ASN.

Sure, I can see 6939 or 701 and know instantly who that is, but in the end, it matters nothing for the other 98% of ASNs I don't recognize on sight and who they might be behind them.

Anybody that is paying money for a "vanity" ASN is just doing it for self-ego stroking. To the people doing the work, it doesn't matter one iota.

Most of my training classes lately has used VitalSource. Apparently they take their DRM pretty seriously, and hide their keys pretty well, and rotate them often.

There's some older DRM strippers for it that no longer work, I'm guessing anybody that has a working set of key extraction won't tip their hat on it.

Of course lo-tech methods can work well enough.

And FWIW: Kindle seems to be switching over to ePub as the default method.
