IMO I would have agreed with this statement 2 months ago but now it’s clear AI is already much better at reviewing and even testing code (via spinning up simulators, etc) much better than we can. We’re already using AI’s outputs in production and not writing much code these days.

React 18 was released in March 2022 though. It’s been over 2 years, not 3 weeks. I’ve also actually thought the React team is pretty careful about breaking changes. Their 19 breaking changes doc is mostly about removing already-deprecated APIs.

What is fake about all the milestones they achieved?

Occasionally i've stumbled upon some neat tool or beautiful software and i'm like, wow - who's behind this? And then I realize it's these two folks. Their approach is so surprising and inspiring, thanks for putting out some cool stuff into the world!

I think their philosophy / research is in understanding how to build modern software that is more resilient. So from that research/exploration standpoint it makes sense to me they would go that route instead of using older tech

100% agree with this, especially the part about slowing down code reviews. Don’t be condescending but give your opinion directly, asking if it makes sense. I personally like “what do you think about renaming this… was thinking because…”

Ha I thought it was great. “Adaptation” is the key. The original book was a bit sexist…

100% agree with using night shift/flux.

But having a monitor on in the dark, even if I use flux/night vision and even with low brightness physically hurts my eyes compared to just using dark mode on my apps.

He should write a book on moderating online communities.

Not joking, we are trying to build a large online community now and I would love to pick his brain on balancing incentives, encouraging curiosity, having equanimity, and all kinds of aspects in “practical sociology”.

I think his in-the-trenches experience would benefit many people trying to build and maintain healthy online communities.

+1000 on this. When I was younger I would work for my employer on the weekends/late nights to try to get ahead. Did that for so many years. I only gave myself a little bit of free time for myself on the weekend.

I _never_ thought I would burnout. “If you enjoy work, work life balance doesn’t matter” I would think to myself. But the point above about “it will take longer, but it will happen” is absolutely correct.

I am now burned out, 13 years later. I’m now going through the process of changing how I think about work-life-balance.

Find a passion outside of work. Think about something that is meaningful to you or some hobby you want to try.

Plan activities with your friends ahead of time - hikes, going to restaurants, just hanging out. It gives you something to look forward to on the weekends.

Trip bundles, pinning, mail previews. Inbox was much cleaner than Gmail. Gmail also feels slower than Inbox - spinners on startup.

And other UX issues: seeing previews of images right in the email list, font/UI makes it harder to find things vs Inbox. Inbox was a much nicer UI/UX.

Ads are annoying but I would have been fine with ads if it was integrated in Inbox.

And look, I understand that it doesn’t make sense to invest in/maintain two heavily used email clients. But the most infuriating thing is the trip bundles. That was my most used feature and such a distinguishing aspect of Inbox that it’s almost insulting that Google would tell me I can “find my favorite features in Gmail” when it’s blatantly not there.

Redux is definitely not the simplest solution :) I’d argue that starting with local state (which is what hooks seems to be headed towards), then profiling, testing, and adding small amounts of debouncing code where appropriate is more aligned with your sentiment of “don’t prematurely optimize” vs starting with redux.

grid-gap is annoying to replicate/hack in flexbox. Although the column-reverse/row-reverse feature in flexbox is awesome.

Two big things in grid come to mind that make me use it much more than flexbox: grid-template-areas, and being able to overlap cells using lines.

In general, having a flexible first-class 2d layout is much easier to work with and change later than having nested 1d layouts.

I want to be able to play back the iTunes movies I bought on my 4K TV without having to buy an Apple TV device.

We just recently got a 4K OLED and the difference between that and my old HD plasma (especially with HDR features) is huge.

I hope they allow playback of 4K content... right now they only do that for Apple TV.

Super coincidental that Elon announced he was thinking about taking the company private right after this happened.

My guess is that they had run the numbers on taking the company private before. Since the Saudis had approached Elon before and he denied their offer (for whatever reason) he probably was upset that they acquired a stake through secondary markets and tweeted their half-baked plan... (not a good course of action IMO)

Maybe off-topic but the website is noticeably faster than the Svelte guide (https://svelte.technology/). Is it built on Sapper itself? Or is it just a static site?

I am a solo founder and yeah, I completely agree with this. I severely underestimated the emotional burden of going it alone. I am in a much better state now, but it was definitely a struggle. If I had to do it over again this is the main thing I would change - be more open towards and work harder towards finding a co-founder.
