It depends on your location. Some of our staff live locally, and some commute from all parts of Sydney and the surrounding regions. I come in via train most days and it's a 10min walk from the station.

There's a surprising amount of software jobs in Western Sydney in IoT as it's the industrial heart of the Sydney region. In our case, the office is next door to the factory, so we can collab with hardware and manufacturing folk easily.

We are having conversations about opening an office in the city - mostly for tech workers. But that is still in early conversations and there are no concrete plans or timelines yet.

I took a three year break that combined freelancing, some personal projects and a good bit of everything but devwork. Coming back into a full-time dev role was challenging for a couple reasons, but most pointedly all the effort required to rebuild the emotional muscles to negotiate the political/social situations. Took a good 6 months before it felt effortless again.

I am thankful for the opportunities and growth that my break enabled. At the same time, it has felt that getting back into work routines has been just as awkward as getting out of them.

This is a really nice overview of the status quo.

It's also great to see a statement on JS lib proliferation which lays out a concise, balanced and pragmatic argument.

Similarly, I went part-time a few years ago (4 days) and I would say it's been one of the better decisions I've made.

Given the typically high salaries in the dev world, working part-time is an easy path to maintaining a work/life balance which provides time to pursue personal projects.

I've had fair success with similar arrangements (4 days instead of 5) and have found that I am just as productive in the 4 days as I am in the standard 5. The reduction in stress and the enjoyment that comes from pursuing your own interests has a tremendously positive impact on both your life and your work.

Arranging part-time conditions can be a slightly bumpy process: as stated above, management is often initially offended that you don't want to dedicate your life to their company, but framing your request correctly can smooth over most bumps.

When requesting a part-time arrangement I usually present it quite honestly: referring to a need for work/life balance, but also referring to the learning outcomes from pursuing challenging projects and the positive impacts they will have on my experience and capacity at work.

At the end of the day most managers realise that they are faced with either agreeing or facing the inevitable lose of an employee, but the decision can be made easier for them if you highlight the positive outcomes for your performance at work.

Incidentally, when I've described my part-time work schedule to friends and family, the universal response has been amazement and jealousy. The desire for a better work/life balance is such a common thing that I'm curious as to why so few people pursue better arrangements...?

I feel as though there may be a bit of misunderstanding as to what the term implies from an employer's perspective and hence what is actually being requested by "full stack" positions. Given the ever-changing state of the tech industry, the term offers a comparatively safe option to an employer.

If any of us were to make an investment, maximum return with minimum risk is our natural choice. Given that an investment will never come without risk, we will obviously seek to minimise them. A business investing in an employee can seek to minimise their risk by hedging their bets and advertising for a role requiring an individual that is capable of multiple functions and is capable of adapting to changing needs.

Generally speaking, a "full stack" developer has a particular strength, but is capable of much more. The potential that exists in a multi-skilled developer is what appeals to an employer. Multi-skilling often implies experience adapting, learning and improving, so as a business changes, as its needs change, its workforce's capabilities can change to adapt.

Technical competency across the entire stack is rarely a necessity; intelligence, motivation and an open mind are the essentials. Maintaining an awareness of the broader picture is definitely helpful - when you have a new problem an awareness of the stack can provide an idea of where to start, which logs to start tailing and how you can start trying fix things - but it's the ability and openness to flying by the seat of our pants that makes the "full stack" magic.

This is pretty fantastic. She's illustrating the oft-forgotten fact that you can change your passion and direction at any point.

Your fourties may not mean as much as it used to, but for the many of us that went school -> uni -> tech industry, her example proves that the decisions that defined the path of our youth do not restrict our future.

Given that the author was contributing to a more accessible culture at one of the largest tech gatherings in the world, it's disappointing to see so much disbelief and anger here.

Her response and the resulting actions may seem harsh as an isolated incident, but they reflect her frustration with the countless times that she would have ignored such statements.

In the context of an event that prioritises diversity and equality - such that it has achieved 20% female attendance - the behaviour of the gentlemen involved represents exactly what the organisers are fighting against.

The best response to this story would be for readers to reflect and to realise how unintentionally alienating the macho nature of code communities can be.

The larger picture here is not Man vs. Woman. The issue is that we are members of a subculture which projects an image of immature and offensive behaviour. Behaviour which offends other races, ethnicities, ages, abilities, religions, sexual orientations AND genders.

Rather, the article raises a common problem for many tech companies. Specifically, creating a more accessible culture.

Replacing the role of female entering FB's workplace - how would a conservative or devoutly religious _male_ would respond to the machismo described? Likewise: a feminist male, a homosexual male, a father, a grandfather.

The article offers another voice calling for an increased awareness of serious problems in our industry.
