I've wondered this too. I've seen someone make a COVID data library but I thought about how much more difficult it would be to learn the library instead of just importing and manipulating the data.

My best thought is that it saves time to import, it saves visual lines which may make it easier to understand what is code ripe for modification and code that shouldn't be changed.

Science is science when an author can be removed from a study and the experiment can be repeated. A 12 year old or science hater should be able to reproduce the results if it's science.

Things that aren't science-

Authority- A PhD/medical doctor/a scientist, these are human opinions, not science. They can cite studies to be scientific.

There's value in non scientific disciplines, but they have their own burdens to be aware of.

I'm not sure what's better, keeping data in tabs but at risk, or involuntarily losing data to protect users.

There needs to be outrage at the Physician cartel, the hospital cartel, the pharmacist cartel, the pharmacy cartel, the pharma manufacturer cartel, and insurance cartel.

These government granted monopolies make unnaturally high incomes due to regulatory capture.

My best solution is to legalize a science based healthcare. Although the cartels would never allow it, they have spent billions establishing Authority based healthcare.

There is some European fantasy that exists in the United States.

Anyone who travels to Europe is shocked at home, food, and car sizes. Sure there is beauty and history, but the standard of living seems significantly worse off.

There may be something to be said about safety nets, but it sure was a wakeup call for me.

I recently was interviewed by a national/international news organization, I have concerns "Fame will get to me".

Although, the big lesson I learned from this is Einstein cheated, and that caused the collapse. Solutions could be resisting urges or open relationships (although I have doubts).

Anyway, my wife has contributed or provoked ideas, editing, and real life implementation of the ideas. She didn't get interviewed.

I'm not famous (yet), I was a B+ student, I feel normal. But over the years strangers greeting me. IRL, or strangers being dissapointed in a personal political opinion, or the interviews make me realize it might happen.

I don't want to destroy the family I love.

The worst part was the feeling betrayal as I unfollowed personal friends and people I communicate with. Unfortunately even one like/retweet turns your profile into political garbage.

I am an early bird and there's definitely a weird expectation to stay later than 8 hrs plus lunch.

I definitely never got any bonus points for being at work before my boss.

Of course people want flexibility, but there are cons-

Much more difficult for collaboration especially for small questions

Bad workers exploring nice policies

Pros-

I can sleep/think about code without being paid. Making my solutions lower cost and higher quality

I think you are missing the science and math aspect of this. This isn't a contest. Physicians make lots of money by following tradition and practicing medicine as an art. There is huge debate that Physicians could lose their monopoly powers if medical is a science.

We may be talking past each other as your points aren't relevant to Engineering.

I'm going to highlight this-

Engineering is Science and math vs Programming which is optimization.

Okay I'll explain one more time, maybe a second write will clarify.

In Engineering, everything is defined with specifications and based on specifications you can calculate if something will work. If you need something to work at 100 degrees C but it will never get to 110C, you don't buy a material that works at 110C, you find the cheapest material that works at 101C. (Factor of safety aside)

You can prove in math your design will work

In Programming, unless you are working at switch levels, how could you prove your code is most optimized?

It's not going to be. Abstraction has removed the possibility of doing that.

The closest thing I've seen to Engineering in the Programming world is Industrial Engineering. This is the way Engineers optimize production environments. You can see this in Programming in various time/load aspects. But industrial engineering is an "After the fact", and as much as I like optimization, it has a reputation of not being Engineering.

I have no idea why you are bringing up Microsoft and Google.

If you haven't taken a marketing class, I highly recommend it.

To clarify, you cant know what is the most efficient path in Programming.

You can modify and time, but you can't know ahead of time.

I would feel significantly more comfortable calling programming an art rather than science or Engineering.

I was an engineer before switching to programming and despite throwing the word Software Engineer in my title, there is no Engineering.

There is developing only.

'best practices' come from Authority, not science(note at bottom). This is a stark contrast to Engineering where everything is proven with math.

(Note)We don't write in logic gates anymore, efficiency is obscure at modern coding levels.

Once you have a codebase in place, things are a whole lot easier.

You sound blessed to not have run into huge spaghetti code with no comments, no testing, violates best practices, and doesn't work for the purpose, and also doesn't compile.

After this job doing bug fixes and feature adding, I'll take new code ANY day.

As someone that used both, I think you are under the psychology spell.

It's not like you could leave Apple, you are locked in.

It may be hard to put into words why you feel that way. (which is why your post never mentioned anything about quality)

As mentioned opening the iphone box and giving Apple my personal information felt fantastic. The actual performance and quality was extremely dissapointing.
