I would think that it scales, but that effectively practicing "highly skilled, non-naive good faith communication" is very difficult, and requires a lot of practice and honesty.

It starts with not assuming bad faith from the other side.

Trying to adapt your communication strategy depending on the profile of the other side is not really "good faith". The goal is to train _ourselves_ to look at reality in a less biased, personal way. Wanting to max out every opportunities precisely tends to distort reality.

we also do have a strange narrative surrounding exercise and weight loss that I bought into

This narrative is pushed by the fast and highly-processed food industry. MacDonalds is sponsoring sport events with that very narrative : "morbidly-obese children of 8 should just do a bit more sport"

It seems you are over-generalizing. Maybe people are not like you.

People will absolutely leave your company if they think they can get paid more elsewhere.

Maybe you will. Maybe they won't. Everyone has his own bar for "enough" money. For some there is no such bar.

I think both you and the guy you replied to are right. It is just 2 aspects of life.

What matters is how do we want to live life ? Do you want to accept that everything is pre-decided, and that we are puppets to our own biases, or do we want to believe that the power of our destiny is in our hands, that we change in every fleeting moment, and we can decide to change for the better version of ourselves ?

Because what you believe influences deeply what you become.

people die during work, and it doesn't indicate any wrongdoing on any part.

Yes this may be true, but it is not relevant to the article content, where clearly it seems the working environment is at play.

And given the history of Amazon mistreating its workers, it is very hard to give them the benefit of the doubt.

To me, this simply shows how inequal the american society has become, and how the stock market amplifies it.

You can have an impact on the real economy with stocks. Look at what happened with GameStop. But that impact is done and decided by the wealthiest, who will reap the benefits of it.

But if you live paychecks by paychecks, having no money to put into stocks, you just suffer the consequences of this impact.

But everything else is _never_ the same. Once you're paid more, you move into a bigger house, have more needs, and without knowing it you're just as tight on money as you were before.

But then you just have more stress at work, and you just can't quit that easily bc there arent so many jobs that pay as much as this one...

Just to provide the other side of this general advice, that is really everywhere, but rarely delivers in regards to happiness.

I too plead guilty of not having at all a deep expertise in this area.

But this makes me think of the myth of AI achieving "General Intelligence", ie an intelligence adapting to life and all its messy complexity, like humans do.

Everybody thought it would be a piece of cake in the 1970s, and then the science just didn't followed.

Now with neural networks, and GPUs, this myth is back on the table, but all researchers in the field continue to claim "AI is nowhere near General Intelligence"

_barely_ here embodies imo the difference between knowing theoretically "yeah I can do some bad sometimes", and really feeling it in your guts, or your heart, rather than your head.

Wisdom comes when feeling who you are, not having some distant idea about who you are

LSD alone does not create any violence, it does not bring any evil into your mind from the outside.

It mostly shows things that usually stay in the unconscious part of our mind. It is more like a lens than a seed.

Of course Barely being able to contain violence is concerning, but let's face it, it is a daily struggle for a LOT of humans. Our good intentions dp not always weigh up when for example we are starving to death. Anger, greed or hatred, are some of our common struggles, but most of the time they stay hidden in our subconscious, bc we do not like to see ourselves as persons able to perpetrate violence.

But only when we see it (it requires honesty, not necessarily lsd xD) and we resolve to work on it, can we really grow.

Honestly, as someone who took that kind of substances, this is not terrifying.

This is actually going out of denial, and really just seeing ourselves just the way we are. Agreed, we have a pretty fucked up side of us, but also a true potential for love and sharing.

These 2 sides are mixed, in conflict, and ever-evolving, but really, they are us. It may appear terrifying, but really, when you see it, it has a freeing and peaceful quality to it, because you just "know" that this is true.

So, let's allow to launch a few more satellites in order to set our observatories on the far side of the moon ?!

How much ? Surely having only 1 or 2 would require a planetary consensus, so let's say every country can have one or 2 ?

Or simpler, let's everyone who has enough money to do it ! Yay !

Coming In : "how we came to pollute the far side of the moon"

I do not know anything about drugs, but I searched for "heroin", and was brought to the "Diamorphine" page, which seems a bit different.

Regarding your request on unit tests : do not do too much of them, too low-level. Try to write tests whose output should not change, should you refactor, this way they will help you avoid side-effects of refactoring. If your unit tests are too low-level, you will need to change them everytime you change your code.

One good think to test would be your fuzzy-matching logic, with edge cases taken into account.

Happy hacking !

There is often an array of benefits.

Following on your example, if you buy seed from the local seed & feed, you :

- build resilience, for example if a global pandemic prevents far-reaching import-export

- are less subject to geopolitics

- money invested have a higher chance to stay in the local economy : the owner of the local seed & feed may buy its vegetables from you

- create local jobs : this seed & feed owner may be able to create jobs for people

- overall avoid the lock-in that you can have being tied to XYZ megacorp, for example if they now decide to only sell you seed that will grow with their newly branded feed

- preserve local folklore : maybe there is a kind of seed that grows really well on your soil, but not so much in the others, so XYZ has decided to discontinue it because the market is too small to be profitable

This is scary if the same engineers, who promised us our data would be safe, not sold for showing us ads, that AI would not be racist, start playing with the earth's climate...

We described what we had learned as Google engineers who worked on a well-intentioned but ultimately failed effort to cut the cost of renewable energy.

A "well-intentioned but ultimately failed" attempt at reversing climate change may be more complicated to correct than a bug in production.

This rethoric has been proven false in the software development ecosystem.

Nowadays almost all new programming languages are open-source, and *nix OS softwares have won the cultural battle over Windows in the devops community.

the supposedly bad capitalist IP system is also the reason for innovation and cooperation

For me this is as much a myth as the good old "the wealth trickles down from the rich to the poor"

I get what you mean.

I agree with you, some scientific concepts -at our state of understanding-, may seem universal and generalize everywhere, such as Einstein's work on relativity that the Mars helicopter must be using.

What I wanted to emphasize is that, humans are deeply political and biased animals, and will always use a scientific concept to their own interests, even ever so slightly. Just look on the horror of the stuff psychiatry has done the past century : accusing women of being frigid if their child was autistic, saying that their genitalia made them prone to psychiatric disorders, the list goes on...

In my opinion, the concept of "addiction" falls into the 2nd category. Humans are just so complex, that we will never isolate the gene of addiction, but nevertheless, this is not a requisite to start saying that junk-food or smartphones can damage your quality of life.

Science should be a tool, not be a religion that you MUST trust.

When the voice of the people does not matter anymore because some guy in a white coat said "Science, you know", this is another kind of bad trend.
