I hate to break it to you, but the only open source projects that last are sponsored by big companies. Most people don't want to work on edge-case bug fixes unless they are paid.

This again? Nobody was forced to spend $100,000 on a college degree with no chance at actually getting a job. Community college was and is a great option at a fraction of the cost.

I've been talking about the evils China for at least a decade. I've met too many people that have this thought that the US is somehow worse than China, so we shouldn't have a say when they stamp out religion, crush all resistance, and murder groups and people that are deemed enemies of the state.

Future generations will look back and wonder why we never did anything about these evils.

How are they going to 'login'? If it's a link with a unique id associated with the email address, it's essentially a password that can't be changed.

The fact that a person will need to keep opening their email is really a deal breaker. Usage will drop off pretty quickly.

The person running the meeting should be moderating it as well, which would solve these issues.

I interviewed for a position last year where the company had a very successful product and was growing, but still small. They wanted to restructure everything (the way they code, teams, management style) to be more like Google.

I made it to the last interview stage, which would have been a 4 hour remote white-boarding session, where they would give me something to code and a team of developers would watch me. I turned it turned it down and found a much better position the next day.

The first stage of the interview was light technical and almost all a psychological test to see if I would be a good 'culture' fit.

The interviewer was a first-time 20-something manager that wanted to make a name for himself and had read a few silicon valley books about technical interviews. He actually told me this.

Most companies aren't Google and shouldn't be emulating much of anything there.

I'm also now sure where there is criticism that employees need to turn to 'federal assistance'. Amazon warehouse jobs have been on the high-end in terms of pay for this kind of job for many years. Well above minimum wage in most states.

I knew this was the next step for these companies. They don't want to lose millions and the easiest thing to do is change the name. At some point, the public will forget.

Because Portugal doesn't have countries like Mexico bordering it that will use the legal drug trade to further fund cartel violence and control over the country. Corruption is already so rampant, they need to fix their problems before we should ever think about legalizing all drugs.

We already have an Opioid crises in the US..and this is with legal drugs. Lawmakers are already starting to blame the legal drug dealers and creators for getting people addicted.

If drugs are legalized, a person shouldn't be able to sue the dealer or creator. In the US, it seems like the attitude is "my body, my choice". Until that choice has negative consequences and then the person with the biggest wallet is sued for damages.

I don't really see happening in Portugal.

The real issue is that people are illegally bringing their kids (or other people's children) over the border through dangerous conditions (100 degree weather, no water, kids are abused, etc). Our doctors do everything they can, but sometimes children die as a result of these conditions.

I suppose they could be angry at the people from Latin and South America for putting these children in this situation in the first place, but what would that accomplish?

We can either:

1) Turn them all away 2) Detain the adults and kids together and risk molesters and abusers continuing to abuse these children until we can figure out their legal status 3) Detain them separately 4) Let them into our country

#3 is the most humane and #4 is not realistic. The conditions in the detainment centers are also a result of funding that was cut by the Democrats.

It's pretty sick for a political party (the Democrats) to point at the poor conditions of these detainment centers yet cut the funding at the same time, which would result in better conditions.

It makes sense that 'coworkers' went down. Merely asking a girl out in the office is now considered 'harassment'.

It will be very difficult to fight company culture. You will either need to go with the flow or management and team leads will find a way to replace you.

Sometimes being the best programmer isn't what's wanted at a company.

I'm in the same boat: I'm working with legacy code and some new technology and I don't have much time during the day to learn anything in depth (and management just wants me to get things done).

Especially as a new hire, it's better just to figure out how to get your job done and worry about the details later.

It doesn't work for everyone. You need to have almost the same amount of discipline to work from home as you do to start your own company.

I've been working from home for the last decade and I wouldn't have it any other way. No distractions and I am more productive than when I was at an office. I also have more time during the day to spend with my family.

I have the option of working from an office (my remote client is 10 miles from my home), but I have found that when I actually go into the office, I get much less work done (random distractions from management, etc).

The minimum wage was set only to $4.71/hour in 1999. The reason there was no inflation is because most companies were probably paying somewhere around this wage already. Just because there was no minimum wage set, doesn't mean there wasn't a minimum wage dictated by the free market.

Let's try doubling it, like having a $15 minimum wage and see what the actual changes would be.
