OP is using Apple so maybe that's why? I use PS weekly and I've never seen it (or anything else) touch my hosts file on Windows. I just verified - nothing beyond my own entries.

The truly absurd part is that datacenters are barely being built and those that are built can't be turned on because they don't have enough power. Satya Nadella admitted recently that they have warehouses full of unused hardware because they a) can't get datacenters built and b) don't have enough power i.e. this whole RAM scandal is a bloody joke. If OpenAI goes bust (their financials are a huge mess and lots of red flags - they might not even survive to IPO!) and then what will happen to all those "inked" deals to buy all that RAM?

Got a 7-year old QNAP NAS recently and wanted to try Jellyfin. Installed, running, indexing... 6 hours later NAS is no longer reachable. Nothing worked so had to hard reboot. Afterwards the Jellyfin service wouldn't start anymore. Installed Plex (via app store) and 2 weeks later everything is indexed and streams to multiple devices, though I did have to google a few times to fix things related to crashing while transcoding and playing subtitles. It was literally 2 toggles in the UI. The only irksome thing is it doesn't let me play audio files (which could be related to the crappy built-in Plex app on the cheap projector). I also wish there was a way to disable all the (paid) cloud offerings, I want it to be LAN-only.

To be fair, Jellyfin page doesn't list my NAS as being supported, so I had to "manually" install it (a couple commands and clicks).

Related (for the non-grey/whitebeards who saw Revenge of the Nerds): Calling someone a nerd used to be fairly demeaning. Today I would say it swings between okay/acceptable and funny/cool, depending on the social circle.

Hyperscalers are in big trouble if the build out suddenly stalls.

How would you define stalled? Hardly anything has been built in the last 2 years (and most of those juicy new GPUs must be sitting in a warehouse somewhere waiting to be installed, together with all of our RAM and HDDs).

I think OP is basically applying "vote with your wallet" strategy and/or some kind of "action speaks louder than words". As I understood from the article, they have been vocal about trying to change things, but they are shouting into the ether since nothing has changed and in fact only getting worse.

My workplace does this for EVERYTHING. And they are always immediately obviously AI slop, both because we all know they wouldn't ever pay an actual artist to create graphics, but also because the people creating the graphics have no sense of style and let it generate the most generic shit possible with zero creativity.

It's definitely not helpful. It's just annoying and disgusting and a waste of resources IMO. But hey at least Powerpoint presentations have AI slop instead of stuff taken from Google Images!?

Someone remind me again why this is a good idea to be able to create perfect fake images?

The "excuse" is that there is no root repo :)

It's not fun to copy/paste 3 git commands? What a truly gilded engineering life you must live! :)
