Just wanted to say that the app is really fun to use and I love that you're immediately pushing sentences instead of contextless vocab. I have been developing something in a similar vein as I've gotten jaded by current offerings so it's genuinely encouraging to see others developing in this space!

Not too much speculation needed as to why: data collection which is then used to enhance both their Search and Assistant products + they can easily start pushing their search and assistant through the platform once adoption is high enough and people who are used to Orion will more easily be convinced to just fork up a little money for continued or slightly improved features/access
Sure plastic aren't great for the environment when we're just dumping it out there without much care. Obviously reducing waste and reusing is what we should strive for on all fronts. Demonizing one thing results in overcompensation on the flip side and we know for a fact that that's not where we want to end up either. Remember when we tried to reduce paper use as much as possible because of deforestation? Or saturated fats?
They could soon realize China and Russia may actually make better allies. Might not be what the consensus on HN prefers, but maybe it’s time to look east.
We need more cooperation for collective benefit instead of cooperation for the sake of profit
I HATE advertising on YouTube/Spotify/Websites but don’t really mind them on Instagram and actually sometimes quite enjoy them on TikTok.
The first difference for me is that on YouTube/Spotify/Websites they obscure the content and force you to watch/see the advertisements but on Instagram and TikTok it’s just as easy to skip an advertisement as it is a video/actual content.
The second difference is that usually the advertisements on Instagram and TikTok are targetted based on my preferences anyway so I’m more likely to look at it and often even interact with it.
The third difference is that on TikTok especially where I actually sometimes look forward to the ads, they are actually putting the customer first rather than their product. The videos are sometimes viral content variations which are interesting to watch or short stories which have product in them.
It’s the same as influencer marketing with product reviews. I make an effort to watch those if I’m looking for a product in the same category or sometimes just to know what’s currently out there, but that’s effectively also advertising just that it puts the customer first.
So while I agree some forms of advertising are cancer, I appreciate others and don’t want the good kind to go away because I don’t know everything and sometimes it’s only through advertising that I discover new brands and products that have become my go tos.
Unless it’s for a senior role, why not just find the candidate you and your team can work best with? Skim through CVs and drop the first 20 an email asking them about their last team/boss or their day or to tell you the last thing they learnt. Something personal, the goal is to note their communication style. Pick 10 you feel matches the energy you want. From those 10 get 2 in the office every day for 2 weeks to see how they work with peers/competitors and your team. By the end of two weeks you should have a relatively good hire which you can work with to fit the team.
