I'd guess because the market isn't really there when wire is extremely cheap and the building codes require more outlets than most people need. The wire for your sconce has already been run through the wall, it's at an outlet. Managing cables is not that hard.

Power tools are a bit different because they need to fit into any given tight space about once, and can't rely on wall power being nearby. Your sconce and kitchen appliances don't work on the same assumption.

If Apple should be sued for anti-consumer behavior this is why... It costs time and money to fix software with every MacOS release and I'm getting close to suggesting we add a 50% Apple tax on products to pay for the additional support it entails.

We want to revolutionize the way we smell by democratizing scent. Provide new technologies to discover and recreate smells in any environment, at home or on location.

The applications are endless. We can train medical professionals and industrial workers to recognize dangerous scents without putting them in harms way. We can create the next generation of virtual experience, expanding art into new dimensions.

This has been done before, going back to the 60s. It's kind of niche but the practical issues of building a device that can do it and one that people will buy have been insurmountable.

Consumers are free to buy other things, like yourself. It doesn't sound like regulation was necessary, as the free market provided products that fit your needs.

I fundamentally disagree with the notion that government should have a say in design decisions for consumer products past safety and environmental concerns. I don't design things to support every consumer use case, I don't document it so those use cases can be supported, and I don't take it personally if a consumer chooses a competing product because it fits their use cases better. If enough consumers do that, I support those cases.

There is plenty of consumer freedom in consumer electronics. We don't need the government telling us what they think our customers want.

Why not NaN for floating point division and INT_MAX for integer division?

When you write code that may divide by zero you need to check the result afterwards (and in truly defensive programming that is every time you divide numbers). 0 is not a great choice because it doesn't necessarily mean you divided by zero - in floating point, dividing by a sufficiently large number or when working with the status register set to flush denormals to zero then normal division can result in 0. For integer division, any fraction will result in 0.

No valid division can result in NaN or INT_MAX.

The hard part of electric vehicle has never been assembly - its batteries and charging. Toyota and VW can ramp up as much as they want, but they'll probably have to buy the batteries from Tesla.

Tesla is not without its problems, but I think it's a bit naive to focus on the solved problems as limiting their potential. It's also the wrong thing to look at - Tesla is concerned about dictating the future of transportation and energy, selling cars is a means to an end.

Cash back is pretty standard, if not below other rates (I'm not even sure what qualifies as 1 vs 2 vs 3%, seems random). The disputes aren't any easier or harder than I've seen through other apps for different banks.

The graph for expenses looks good, but I've had that with other accounts for years.

I agree it doesn't make sense to blame bankers for exploiting the legal system that allows them to enrich the rich at the expense of the poor for a commission, other than the revolving doors between government and industry and lobbying efforts to maintain our broken society the way it is.

There are numerous financial products and services available to only the wealthy that reduce tax burden and increase wealth and income that are inaccessible to anyone else, create little value, and are predicated on the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few.

Just a random example, if you can afford to buy a home in cash, you shouldn't because the mortgage terms the banks will offer you are too good to pass up - you'll come out ahead just by taking on low interest debt and accounting for the rise in the home's value plus the more lucrative investments you can make with the cash.

In other words, the people who get the most help are the ones who need it the least. That is the travesty of contemporary finance.

No, shame on Wisconsin. This entire fiasco is the result of self serving politicians doing dumb things to get a headline today while sticking their successors with the mess it causes while constituents foot the bill.

This was never about corporate welfare. Foxconn never planned to build a factory there, not seriously at least. This was an exercise in generating positive news cycles for republican lawmakers in exchange for goodwill in federal policy making - in other words, political corruption.

There are several piles of dirt in Cahokia. Part of the trouble is there has never been a serious attempt to uncover and restore the site. But unlike say Machu Pichu or Chichen Itza, it's on the shore of the Missippi with a highway cutting through it and a few centuries of both flooding and human development on top of what could be there.

ASoIAF isn't praised for its "realism" so much as the subversion of fantasy tropes that are a staple of grimdark fantasy. The "realism" is in the notion that knights aren't chivalrous and ladies have to fight for themselves, while the commoners suffer under their lords and medieval society is generally dysfunctional.

At the end of the day it's still fantasy with dragons and ice zombies pillaging fictional societies. There are absolutely allusions to real peoples, but something Martin does exceptionally well is the synthesis of his fictional cultures from various influences in real history to create things that are familiar enough while still being distinct.

This is a bit extreme. I think short exercise windows are fair, it's the tax code that makes it suck. Multiclass stock should be illegal outright, while dilution is a known unknown you factor into your negotiation - depending on how early you join.

DRY Is a Trade-Off 6 years ago

Not sure if anyone else shares this anecdote, but I've noticed the most DRY-hard programmers tend to be the most resistant to things like functional programming, monads, and other generic approaches which are the ultimate realization of DRY. And often the most inscrutable.

Another anecdote on DRY: I'm currently refactoring two interrelated systems that share a single function, and very horrible bad things happen if the systems disagree on the return value of that function. However sharing the same code is more complex than duplicating it and this has a nontrivial impact on how the systems are distributed. So today I'm undoing the original work I did to make it DRY - turns out that sometimes, you need to copy/paste.

This is a regulatory problem

This is a consumer problem - "you get what you pay for."

If you want to buy something from a retailer that gives a shit about their wholesalers, shop at a local superstore for whatever items your looking for and eat the difference in cost.

If Amazon was a corner hardware store it would have been fined multiple times and the owner might well have been jailed by now.

If Amazon was a corner hardware store and not a marketplace, they would have been run out of business by all the customers returning garbage and counterfeits they bought from them. But that's not what Amazon is, they're ostensibly connecting buyers to sellers and providing logistics - not behaving as a retailer that selects their wholesalers and manages their supply chain besides getting shit from point A to point B.

What Amazon shouldn't do is have it both ways, either they're an Ebay-esque digital flea market where everything is buyer-beware, or they're a retailer who is responsible for the garbage on their shelves. They don't want to be either, and if there's regulation to be had, it should focus on that difference (as well as regarding their own products - you don't see flea markets driving their merchants out of business by stealing their products and undercutting their prices, while stores can stock generics alongside their curated shelves).

You're going to have to define "definition" a bit because it's unclear what your goals are.

In general what it sounds like you're talking about is a class of nonlinear processes called "dynamics processing" (common examples are automatic gain correction (AGC), compression, expansion, the compressor-expander (compander)). All have been in production use since the least the 1940s. It's built into your cellphone and also those default sound effects they put in crappy TVs.

Your algorithm as described (convolution with a rect in time == multiplication by sinc in frequency) would be a pretty terrible sounding filter, and would cause some gnarly phasing sound effects to the signal. A linear filter will not solve this problem directly.

What you want to do is extract the envelope of the signal, which can be done using the Hilbert Transform (1), which is an example of a class of algorithms called envelope followers (2).

After extracting the envelope from the signal you can use it to compute a gain to apply to the signal (this is how dynamics processing works). It's not a magic bullet, and dynamics processing is undesirable in high fidelity reproduction. Its used in telephones to compensate for the godawful dynamic range, as an effect in recording or production to add balance within a mix, in conferencing applications to make up for poor mic'ing conditions, and in protection circuitry. You do not want to add more than necesssary, as a general rule.
