As a perpetual beginner, I feel BASIC is under-rated. We should use BASIC to start children off with computing. They'll learn the hairy stuff in due time, but the key is to get them hooked early; and BASIC does an awesome job of that.
BTW, Did the Jews have "authorization" to barge into someone else's country, commit genocide, ethnic cleansing and a 50 year war against the original inhabitants? (aside from that old rag called "The Old TEstament") ... Jus sayin'
Unless I can program and do something useful on the target device itself, it will remain a mere gadget. The novelty of "trying out new ideas in the interpreter" wears off quite quickly. My MBA is (almost) as light as an ipad, and much more useful (programming wise.)
Just out of sheer curiosity, what regexp tutorial would YOU recommend?
I think some examples of actual strings that the RegEx (in section 0.2) actually does match would be quite instructive.
Also, I think word problems develop an essential skill, namely mapping new problems (described usually in natural language) to mathematical concepts using the symbols. Problems come first, the neat symbolic form comes way after and generally the main problem is mapping a vague problem description to a concrete description using the symbolic language provided by mathematical notation.
I wish I'd seen this before I paid 500 bucks for a PAID linux distro. :-/
Thank you for taking the time to explain. In my opinion, these types off attitudes are what are causing beautiful languages to die horrible deaths. The blog post extolls the virtues of "Lisp", but fails to mention which dialect. Extremely off-putting to newcomers if I may say so. At least put a tl;dr up top saying "This is for experts, noobs GTFO!" ...
I tried the example code in cygwin/clisp and it doesn't work. Way to come up with examples. At least mention which version it does work with?
