The patient underwent this therapy under the guidance of a doctor. Any increase in suicidal thoughts would have been caught.

This is a much riskier therapy to try on your own, true.

I think the "dismissive" tone is entirely sarcastic, and really helps to de-emphasize the very intimidating complexity of music theory. I've always been curious about music theory, but have really failed to get anywhere close to learning it because of how formidable the field is. This article made that complexity feel a little less untouchable for someone who was not trained in music, and the sarcastically "dismissive" tone helped a lot.

When you say you don't eat sugar, what does that mean? Do you eat fruit? Bread? Things that metabolize to sugar -- potatoes, squash, tomatoes, grapes, watermelon, barbecue sauce etc. Do you ever indulge in chocolate cake? What about wine or beer?

I just find the term "sugar" to be extremely vague when 50% of foods metabolize to sugar...

I completely believe in the value of education for its own sake, but why does a liberal arts education need to be 4 years long? Couldn't we have a system where a student spends one intensive year focusing on liberal arts, and the rest of the time at university can be devoted to job training?

I often read the comments first, and then read the article. I love comments sections in general (Gawker, Gothamist, NYT come to mind in terms of decent commenters), but I've never learned as much as in the HN comments section.

I probably read ~500 comments a day on HN.
