I was interested in when computers started showing up. I flipped through some years quickly. I see a terminal on page 158 in 1984 ('84:158). What looks like an 8-bit computer at '85:103 and a Mac at '86:190. Anyone see something earlier?

Maybe 75% is a misunderstanding of the "Old-age dependency ratios 1950-2050 in the 19 countries of study" chart. That shows that in 2050 Japan will have 74.32 people over 65 for every 100 people between 15-64.

I think that’s the most likely successful outcome.

2) human consciousness is totally dependent on physical connections of brain neurons
3) something like nanobots are able to determine the frozen brain connections despite the damage of being frozen

The likelihood of all of that happening is probably pretty low. But you have 0% chance of coming back if you don’t get frozen.

I'm not sure if we were able to purchase before vesting. I'm assuming if you left the company the money for any unvested shares would be refunded?
True, but you also have to wait for your options to vest. I did make the mistake of waiting too long. With a 5-year vesting schedule it's possible to still get a stiff tax for the last few years.
This is one area where I think the company didn't make the consequences clear. But I also understand that they were trying very hard to not appear to be giving tax advice. Also, my company specifically asked us NOT to do small purchases. I guess there were people doing monthly exercises with each paycheck and the company didn't like that (it wasn't forbidden, just frowned upon).
Dirt cheap options can be very expensive. The AMT tax can kill you.
The article is 4 years old. I'm not saying it was a smart move, but at the time he would have had to pay taxes that he might not have been able to afford. I know people that left SpaceX options on the table because they couldn't afford the taxes.
A lot of people here are assuming COUNTRY1 is an adversary. I'm going to guess India. It's plausible to think that India would love to be able to build nuclear submarines with equivalent technology to the Virginia-class. It isn't crazy to think they might be willing to pay money for secrets. But it's also equally plausible that they would immediately tell the US to avoid diplomatic complications if it was discovered. It's also easier to justify selling to a friendly country instead of an enemy. He and his wife might have thought, "It's not like India is going to use the information to attack the US. What's the harm?"

It probably doesn't make a lot of sense for a greenfield project, but for established projects it might make sense to stay with the current technology stack. At my last job we had a team of 10+ domain experts that were expert level at a proprietary language. Replacing years of work to save $10k per developer every year would have been a bad decision.

The NEMA 'L' receptacles (L5, L6, ...) are locking. When you connect the two ends together you rotate them slightly so they won't disconnect due to vibration, etc.

As others have pointed out, those official MS VMs are for evaluation only. You are not legally allowed to use them for development. Of course, you could pay MS for a license and do your Windows development in a VM on Linux (or Mac), so that is something that MS supports that Apple doesn't. But to develop for Windows or Mac/iOS you will most likely need to give some money to MS or Apple.
Companies used to take their profits and either invest in R&D/Capital if they were trying to grow, or give dividends if they were mature. But once C-level compensation became focused on stock options, top management have an incentive to increase the stock price over other concerns. If a company spends every dollar of profit (or cheap loans) on buybacks, they aren't spending money on things that will sustain the business long term like R&D, having funds to weather a downturn, etc. Not that every buyback is a problem. Apple has done buybacks because they felt there stock was the best place to invest their money. It's not like they blew through their cash account just to boost the price.
