Credibility helps with deterrence.

One thing we can do is to understand denial is a normal human defense mechanism. Better to avoid triggering denial by not making people afraid of the future. And when denial exists in a person already, best to avoid arguing with or labeling that person and getting them more deeply invested in their denial. Yet, too often we’ve: overwhelmed people with fear, argued with them when they tended towards normal defense mechanisms to cope with that fear, and then labeled people so their initial reaction of denial becomes a permanent part of their identity. Amazingly that isn’t saving the planet too quickly.

The trend I’ve noticed is towards emailed receipts which are not very consumer friendly. It seems like a better option is just taking a snapshot of the receipt on your cell phone. I’d appreciate having that option. A retailer could show the receipt on a tablet and I could take a quick snapshot. Win-win.

I am thinking about work from home recently. The shift to work from home only happened because of the pandemic, but it could have happened years earlier. Telecommuting was a thing since the early 2000’s, but widespread adoption of work from home policy lagged due to various frictions and the inertia of the past. I think ai adoption will be the same, a step function where there’s nothing, nothing but then all at once the major shift comes.

We agree it’s not a constant “we.” And also a lot of the current usage is secondary to pandemic politics where certain demographics and career slots benefitted or alternatively were hurt by covid related policies. My conclusion is only that language and culture change and influence one another.

It is interesting we now call this stuff “conspiracy theories.” We used to talk of “snake oil” or people would make jokes about yoga and health food in the 70s. Currently it’s taken on a newspeaky sort of political flavor with the phrase “conspiracy theory.” In the 90s it was “alternative health” or “eastern medicine.” Interesting how views changed on ways of knowing/cultural relativism in such a short period of time.

The gop is controlled by donors who are mostly free market liberals. Elon won’t let anyone “censor” (regulate) x. The democrats don’t care about national security historically, and it’s not currently an issue their cosmopolitan TikTok loving base cares anything, at all, about. “Security” is something that most democrats I talk to now associate with deportation or military spending, both of which they ferociously hate. Across parties, policy and discourse are reactive. Security requires a proactive orientation that it seems the public sector may structurally lack.

Obviously the median immigrant has strong feelings of loyalty to their mother soil as can be witnessed by the huge Mexican flags and the direct testimony of many individuals. Should we deport all those people who swear loyalty to “La Rasa”? If we want immigrants, and we should because we need them to lead us into the future, we need to be realistic about their loyalties. People are proud of their race/nationality, and immigrants often even moreso.

For sure. But if you read some of that wacky stuff from way back, you can start to see how parts rhyme with aspects of contemporary psychiatry. They too had much better standards and data than their predecessors. The hype around LSD back then, and a bit of the kookiness, was similar to the current emphasis on trauma, ketamine therapy, etc… Stuff that works and is new gets overhyped.

Ironically, many in this thread are advocating for that! Take someone with mental problems, throw a truckload of psychedelics on top. That’ll fix em gud! And, if that doesn’t work, up the dosage, or maybe do the 3000 dollar ketamine sessions twice a week to really really fix the problem.

Wilson was taking a lot of different sorts of drugs iirc. Part of the problem is people take psychedelics in youth, when schizophrenia, bipolar and other mental disorders tend to arise making it hard to quantify true risk.

The use of LSD in psychiatry is one of the less wacky things about the state of psychiatry at that time. Arguably psychiatry is still wacky, and still overhypes novel compounds without knowing how or why they work exactly. LSD was very rigorously studied compared to say today’s use of ketamine.

I feel like coups are more likely in developing or socialist countries. An American coup at this point seems very unlikely to work thanks to “learning from past failings” and stuff like advanced weapons systems. It strains credulity somewhat to act as though ICE, whose purpose has always been immigration enforcement, only started enforcing immigration under Trump. I remember hearing about ICE/immigration raids for many decades now in California.

In any event I think the prior’s point was that the current admins’ zealous focus on immigration is mostly optics. The idea is to get California activists to juxtapose themselves on the evening news throwing bricks and Molotovs against clean cut patriotic young servicemen. The American electorate prefer marines to brick throwers, so it’s just easy politics. It’s been the go to gambit of the Trump team for most of his two terms. Immigration is a very popular issue with voters, but not with educated journalists who know most GOP donors like the Koch brothers are free market libertarians who want totally open boarders and therefore despite the voter concern, nothing meaningful will ever happen because immigration enforcement and reform will remain in essence a tool to whip up hysteria in the non-sophisticated. Immigration and deportation numbers don’t lie, and tell most of the story.

Normal people who have basic needs met will self actualize.
