I found it to be the opposite - no new information, no explanation. While the author certainly know more about programming than a NYT reporter he is simply guessing about the facts (actual LOC, leaker qualifications, employer and motives) and his explanation that comments and trailing brackets explain, even partially, the huge line count is ridiculous.

Perhaps he (or someone else) should contact the NYT reporter to see if this mystery can be cleared up.

This seems very, very strange but seems to be at least tolerated in the Physics world. It was published in a serious journal and has been presented at seminars and meetings. I could not find any discussion - everyone may think it is crazy or wrong or untestable but I just couldn't find anything in writing.

They are not incompatible only if by "tons" you mean "half as many". I would expect some areas of San Francisco to have more kids than others but overall the number is very low.

In Switzerland we rarely have unattributed statements from the government. It would be considered unethical.

Unlike the US with private news providers most Swiss news (television and radio but not print) are mostly funded by the government with fees like in the UK. Government views are well represented but directly.
