Musk aside, there's a strong incentive to withhold information that would be self-incriminating for Tesla (or any other company in such situation). Similar situation with accidents - wouldn't the information mysteriously disappear if it suggested car manufacturers fault? Easy to claim that data was unrecoverable in such case, or that some parts are missing..
NHTS is asking Tesla to dutifully report all cases when illegal function was enabled, or FSD failed, or if car systems misbehaving could contribute to a crash. But can they trust Tesla to provide accurate data? Same with accident investigation - Tesla likely has much more data about events leading to an accident than investigators, bit would they provide all that data if it would suggest Tesla's responsibility for the accident? Looks like we have no choice but to trust Tesla, but should they be trusted in such matters?
Oh come on, pay for use is a solved problem. Look at gas pumps. But if it's not feasible to have a big DC converter in every car then no luck
Electricity meters have been known for decades, even with payment terminals.after all, they were invented to bill customers for electricity used. And I can see authors point - if you look at Tesla chargers, it's not only the stalls but whole underground infrastructure with cooling, air conditioners and who knows what else. If cars were designed to use AC instead it would be enough to have an AC outlet (3 phase probably) and a meter, and whole charging station could be built by an electrician, with standard components. Yep you won't get a megawatt power this way, but 30-50kW is realistic

I don't mind paying for tools I'm using to get the job done. But ignorant remarks in the tone of 'drop the crap you're using, no matter what it is, and install Linux' were maybe good 30 years ago, now it's just kinda disrespectful. People have various reasons to use their tools and it's not because they don't know Linux exists.
But what to do if you really love what you do and can achieve really good results in your work, better than anyone else? It's a source of pride and recognition, no wonder it becomes part of your identity. Now imagine working out instead -everyone can do that, you won't achieve anything interesting this way. Same with bike riding or hobby woodworking - want some results you have to work long hours for that. No point in feeling guilty because you love your job, just don't neglect other responsibilities in life.
Beware, the rustification has broken thru .net defenses :) Not sure if I ever find use for Rust in .net runtime (C# has more or less same capabilities), but congrats anyway. However I'd gladly welcome some lightweight compiled language with easy and powerful meta-programming and AST transformation capabilities.

It's bad news that there are no tools to detect cheating, such situation can encourage dishonest players to cheat and nobody will take seriously accusations about cheating from other players.

I've been using Dell laptops exclusively for many years, but the last purchase was Lenovo Thinkbook 16inch with decent Ryzen. I just liked the specs. The machine works pretty well (Windows) but has some issues I never had with Dell, for example suspend/resume doesn't work reliably, laptop is often unresponsive for some time after wake up, sometimes it doesn't detect a second monitor and I need to unplug it and connect again. And maybe one or two more quirks. So Im not sure what to choose for next laptop. Would be great if Dell offered professional line of laptops with recent AMD processors, but for some reason they don't
Let them innovate where they provide value - in the bike mechanics and drivetrain. But all their batteries are basically the same, built with same li-ion cells from same group of producers. The only innovation here is a proprietary chip making sure you buy only original replacement.
Yep working with big li-ion batteries is dangerous and should be done with proper equipment and safety measures, but claiming that nobody can do that but the producer is BS. They just make sure nothing else is compatible so you have no alternatives. Same with electric tools - is every lawn mower so unique that it can't be powered with another brand's battery? It could, but to prevent that producers add proprietary authentication and such. They even make new generation of tools incompatible with previous gen batteries, just to be sure you're not accidentally reusing anything.
It's not about repairing the battery by amateurs/diy enthusiasts, but the ability to replace the battery with another, compatible. It's not that hard to make sure that new battery meets the required parameters and has compatible connector, so any claim that only one, unique, model of battery can be used is BS. Instead of making stupid excuses producers should clearly specify what are the required parameters and if a battery meets these - should be allowed.
Many producers put a great effort into making sure you can only use their battery for replacement, even if it's obvious that any battery with correct voltage would do. Batteries should be interchangeable just like in cars- nobody sane would claim that using different brand of battery increases risk of car fire. Just set some standards on voltage and power limits and agree on common connector type, this should be done many years ago.
In some cases having a formalized process/methodology helps to appear professional and hide the fact that nobody knows exactly what they're doing. I've seen it it some place - very serious software dev company delivering very serious medical software, but in fact the whole team was just faking it and trying to keep up the professional image. The developers were random people without business domain knowledge, managers were managing the work without understanding it, analysts were producing some documents that nobody understood, customer approved some scopes hoping that the specification is actually what is needed (but in vain). The team was assembled from contractors, and people rotated quite frequently so that there was no chance for them to acquire the domain knowledge necessary to talk to the customer. It was just painful to take part in it, but took me some time before i realized in fact everyone is just pretending to understand what's going on. Endless approvals and multi-step procedures required for medical stuff just made the whole thing impossible to understand and smeared the responsibility so broadly that it was guaranteed there's no single person that knows too much.
But what to do when instead of 6 competent and efficient devs you get 40 people with random mix of skills, no domain knowledge and at moderate programming talent? I dont know Scrum to comment on it, but many management methods converge to 'appear that work is done all the time even if it's just meaningless bureaucracy, make everything slow and inefficient, but manage the expectations - so customer is moderately disappointed all the time but there are no catastrophic failures. And make sure there are no red lights on the dashboard, ever.'
Work is a voluntary contract for both sides and the terms are agreed before signing it, not dictated afterwards . And the standard so far was that the work is done at location specified by the employer. So it's not something that's suddenly been invented to oppress the employees.
I don't know where you take such knowledge from, is there any scientific paper on psychology and social behavior of employer class? I think most people are reasonable and rational in their expectations, and the unfortunate employers who have to deal with tech/it workers have to develop extraordinary patience and self-restraint in order to have anyone doing any work at all.
I think once a privilege has been given (to employees) it's impossible to take it away without a fight. Suddenly something that was a non-issue became a life or death matter. So you're right, now people would expect to be paid extra for working in the office, even if they did that for free two years ago.

Yep the extra flexibility is very helpful and convenient, but with years passing it becomes the norm. And kids needs increase with age, not decrease. So at some point you may realize that there's no more flexibility, you have been stretched to the limit or even further and everything is suffering - you, your work and your family. That's why I think it's dangerous - instead of having a clean cut between work and family we take it just a little bit further every time , all seems fine and productivity is unaffected, and so on until something snaps. So I'd rather say don't make such arrangements the norm because there's no easy way back to full work/family separation
I just mean don't take the remote work idea too far. Raising children is affecting the ability to do any professional work and because of that people deciding to have children should receive various forms of support and protection by social institutions and employment laws. Pretending that you can take care of children while working from home is very harmful idea imho.
Ok I understand that someone has proven that remote work doesn't affect productivity. Not in my case, but maybe I'm the outlier. But remote work combined with having small children - I'm pretty sure it not only affects productivity, but the productivity goes out of the window. And if productivity doesn't suffer when taking care of children then it means there was never any productivity to begin with, or the company was seriously overstaffed.
And in my case remote work allowed me to take better care of kids because of extra flexibility, but at the same time made my work days more chaotic and fragmented. Very hard to find undistracted chunks of time necessary for any advanced tasks. Plus the family gets used to me being available all the time and more needs creep in... All in all, an occasion to spend a full day in the office, alone, feels like a productivity boost :)
I partially agree with the author. It's better if your work includes some hardware too and is not limited to software only. Just much harder for the competition to replicate the product. But the examples he gave are all big, ambitious and universal problems to work on. How to even start on that? I would suggest: start with some industry and learn, find what are their tools, what machines they use, what software, what are the typical problems. Try to solve some of the problems or make better tools. Find your niche. Many companies use old technology, old machines or software because they're specialized/niche and the progress of the tech is slower, less competitive in such niches. It should be easier to improve such tools, even by providing easier integration of software with the existing hardware. Much better chance of success than just trying to tackle top 10 humanity problems.
I have automatic high/low beams function and it works pretty well, sees other cars from far away and switches to low earlier than a human would. The problem is I very rarely use high beams, and never on highways, so it was even stranger for me to see so many Americans drive with high beams. In Europe the annoying habit is to drive with front anti-fog lights on all the time, some people do it but it happens in the US too.
