Unpopular opinion: I think users should be free to choose.
There is nothing unpopular about your opinion - silent majority definitely wants ad-subsidized free tiers (that is why they are so popular and ads are not banned anywhere in the western world), it is just that arguing with radicals on HN or reddit is exhausting and a waste of time in general.
There is an opportunity cost in working on a startup that may fail and leave you with nothing while your uni peers have been cashing juicy RSUs in FAANG-type companies so the actual "risk" could be "having 0 net worth while living in a high CoL area by the time they reach middle age".
Trazodone does little to improve objective sleep quality [0] when used off-label for treating insomnia. From my n=1 experience it it useful as an adjunct to an orexin antagonist in special cases when I stressed/annoyed out of my mind by work or something else, but not as a primary "sleeping pill".
Please stop using ad hominem attacks, this is not the appropriate forum for such remarks.
I feel quite strongly about people nonconsensually filming other people in public spaces. The proliferation of guides about disabling the indicators of active camera on smart glasses make me even more hesitant to normalize or condone such behavior.
I assume that would be considered sexual harassment in most jurisdictions, which local police should concern themselves with, especially if it's happening to minors.
Stealing an Amazon package from your porch is also illegal in most jurisdictions yet police won't do anything with a video from your Ring doorbell showing some generic young-dude-in-a-baseball-cap-and-a-hoodie taking it away. They are only interested in such videos when investigating (what they consider) serious crimes.
especially if it's happening to minors
You want minors to wear Meta glasses and film all the time? I shudder imagining growing up in such dystopia.
I'm at a loss for why you brought up the FBI.
Sorry, that was a snark about how people who support installing smart doorbells and Flock cameras everywhere imagine police would react to a video showing someone stealing a bag from their car or a package from their porch.
Same can be said about what is going on in bedrooms but I don't think that having stronger evidence for home abuse justify the invasion of privacy. And I don't think random people filming everything in bars/restaurants/night-clubs is a price I'm willing to pay just to make it easier to prosecute some crazies or drunken catcallers.
You only have to remind yourself of what catcalling is.
What do you think all these glasshole-women are going to do with bunch of (poor quality, grainy night) videos of some drunk bro on the street telling them "nice rack you have there, sweetheart"? Call FBI so they would give chase on a helicopter immediately?
True “sleeping pills” are usually controlled substances and few doctors would prescribe them as first-line options for a patient who shows up with first time complaints of sleep problems. They won’t be prescribed long-term either.
Modern orexin antagonist sleep medications are not addictive and can be taken long-term.
Well, I don't think this is the case and I haven't seen any research to convince me otherwise.
That paper measures our margin of error when syncing to a perfectly predictable rhythm, not our ability to detect system latency. Applying that to an FPS doesn't really work for two reasons. First, enemies are erratic, meaning you are mostly relying on your reactive visual-motor pipeline, which is bottlenecked by ~150ms anyway. Second, even for purely predictive shots, your brain subconsciously calibrates out fixed hardware lag.
I'll concede that pure prediction absolutely exists in FPS games-like tracking a falling player with the LG in Quake 3 or landing a predictive mid-air rocket. In such cases smoothness of high FPS helps, but adding a 1ms drawing delay to those 500FPS (what the article is about) won't be noticeable at all because your brain naturally calibrates out constant hardware delay.
I would love to see some research confirming that 1ms of addition latency that OP claims to be able to perceive impact performance of twitchy FPS players.
Well, of course people can generally see the difference between 30 and 100+ FPS but it is much bigger delay than 1ms OP claimed they can distinguish.
You think you can and will inevitably fail to do it in blind testing.
Why wasn't he laughed out of the room then?
The other issue is Gen Z and Gen A are now very much opposed to AI.
They say they are, but they have actually been using it so much that they can't even do they homework without AI at this point.
For all we know, the more likely scenario is that Charlie, like a sizeable percentage of his doctor peers, was burnt out, tired, and depressed, did not really have an overwhelming (some might say "healthy") desire to survive (in fact, perhaps quite the opposite), and saw the cancer as a non-undignified quick "way out".
Why do you consider it "more likely"?
Doctors (and medical professionals more generally) rank among the highest in occupational risk of mental health disease, especially for things like addiction, alcoholism, generalised anxiety, ptsd, depression and suicide.
You are suggesting that majority of doctors are depressed with suicidal ideation (hence "more likely")? Care to provide a link to research/data?
It is "Not too well known" because Yandex didn't move all or even most of their employees outside Russia.
I haven't seen any browser attestation proposals prescribing that and I don't see any reason for Mozilla and Apple to support that. Care to provide references?
Why won't FF and Safari be signed?
"Exactly" what? That by "don't let me" you meant "maybe sorta kinda woulda not let me do that in the future and I can't be halfassed to install FireFox"?
What do you mean by that? You can certainly write and run your own adblocker or chose from variety of third-party offerings.
You are complaining about Google dropping a more powerful adblocking API in favor of more restricted one from Chrome? No one is preventing you from using other browsers or modifying Chromium source code in whatever way you like.
How will the government prevent you from owning it realistically? They could put some barriers in front of buying pre-made ones, but gamer CPUs and GPUs can run LLMs just fine, even if trailing data-center models in performance. It is inevitable that whichever SOTA models currently require $$$ data-center hardware will be runnable on mid-range gamer box in 10 years.
This is restating the ‘who watches the watchmen?’ problem, which by definition has no solution. The government writes the laws, no one can stop it from writing overreaching laws, unless there is no separation from the concept of government and citizens themselves.
I have been pondering about this issue due to the ongoing fall from grace of EU with ChatControl debacle. I think the good approach can be to enshrine a strong and modern protections in a constitution-like foundation that requires some very high majority threshold to change. US constitution (especially the original one practically forbidding individual income tax) was great for its time and many European states and EU itself intentionally don't have one. UK and EU and two great cautionary tales of what happens when a group of bureaucrats can just decide that their subjects don't actually have any rights to communicate online in private or post politically-undesirable opinions anonymously on Internet.
First, to be addicted to something does not mean there has to be the same profile of withdrawal that we see in other drugs. Most of the diagnbosis only means you have an obsession that effects your day to day life in a way that causes harm.
I never disputed that. I disputed OP's comparison with alcohol which like other GABA agonists (benzos, etc.) can cause lethal physical withdrawal symptoms. Looking at the downvotes a lot of "man, I scroll TikTok 10 hours a day because I addicted man, literally like heroin, but worse, man!!1" types got offended. Guess people took it as challenge to their victim identity or something ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
But I do not understand your cognitive bias and why you will not do a simple search.
But I did.
According to mean withdrawal effects on cognitive skills, 97.6% participants in group A were able to complete task within assigned time before cessation and after cessation only 57% participants were able to do so, while in group B 94% were able to complete task before cessation and only 72% of participants were able to do so after cessation. Lastly, the mean BP reading checked in group A before cessation was 114.54/82.34mmHg and after cessation, it increased to 122.47/90.34mmHg whereas in group B, before cessation the mean BP reading was 118.32/84.88mmHg and after cessation it was 121.42/88.63mmHg.
So after uninstalling TikTok they will experience a few weeks of decreased mood and concentration but be fine overall? Seems like we are in agreement then!
Can you cite any specific claims regarding withdrawal symptoms from the studies you referenced? I couldn't find any.
OP compared "TikTok addiction" to alcoholism. It is up to them to provide proofs.
Non-competes and the like are gross but what's described here isn't just "bring your expertise to OpenAI" it's "here is how to steal secrets on your way out" which is even grosser.
Most of what happened in this case is straight-up illegal and other parts can be covered by NDA. No need for non-competes to prevent any of this.
I did.
Text following this first sentence of your message doesn't indicate any kind of physical withdrawal symptoms though.
What point? That people experience fatal withdrawal symptoms when they stop "consuming" social media? I find that very hard to believe. Do you have any research proving such claims?
Alcoholic drinking mocktails can experience significant withdrawal symptoms like fever or seizures with potentially fatal results. What do you think will happen to all those "addicted" people after they uninstall TikTok from their phones?
