Furthermore iPhone apps are definitely allowed to embed interpreters (caveat: no JITC's) and run scripts included with the binary or downloaded as part of an in-app purchase.

Have you seen modern robotic prosthetics? I don't want to make light of anyone's situation, but I honestly think we are mere decades away from replacements that are better.

So I'm not worried about the NSA as much as I'm worried about Facebook or Google circumventing ethical principles in lieu of targeted advertising, using my face/name without my consent, backing up private data when I want it deleted, etc.

But this is what all pragmatic people should be worried about. I highly doubt the NSA is going to care about me at any point during my lifetime (although I am a fanatic and would prefer they are unable to), but I measure the odds of Facebook misusing my information in the ways you mentioned as very high.

The largest problem I have with the NSA is that it's a breach of the 4th Amendment AFAIC and I don't like the direction US law enforcement is going in general if these things are condoned.

I think due to evolving as a social animal we necessarily have a sense of justice and a notion that bad behaviour must be punished or corrected. The notion that all bad behaviour is logged by a mysterious being that will present you with whatever comeuppance you deserve after life is a beautiful fiction. It makes one feel much better to believe that over thinking the more powerful person who took your things by force is going to get away with it.

I think it's more a desire to see justice than a desire for something omni-present. People that believe in neither religion nor good government will sometimes make claims like, "yeah one day I'm going to be that guy's boss," which is just saying, "I feel bad now but he'll get his comeuppance later and balance will be restored."

Having an open wifi should leave you free of any charges in the same way that an ISP is. Maybe it should be not culpable modulo keeping logs of everything for up to three months so that law enforcement can attempt to find anyone committing a crime once they have a warrant.

They are not choosing freely, society pushes them to have a cell phone, and by definition there is no free choice of carriers because the government allocates the spectrum.

Look at Apple's App Store. It restricts what developers can do (and charge) and it restricts what users can download (and where from). But, because the short-term benefits are good enough, many people do use it, to the detriment of the group.
