The Oakland PD is corrupt and incompetent. This has been well-documented in the local media, and there has been at least one FBI investigation into the matter. This is part of the reason why the main red light district is in Oakland, not SF.

As far as I can tell, no one has the will, political or otherwise, to take steps towards a remedy.

It isn't just the police department. The state had to come in and run the schools after the school district went bankrupt.

Did I mention that Ebonics as a second language originates from Oakland? When they were rolling up the 60s, a lot of the batshit insane got swept towards Oakland, and it has been festering ever since.

I couldn't agree more. Too bad we spent all of that money on World War II. That was just a whole ton of wasted government stimulus.

This blog post is SO New Yorker. It is the height of arrogance to pass off what is, like it or not, a form of gambling, an expression of greed, as a philanthropic, altruistic gesture. I know as well as anyone here that this is one of the engines of the economy, but come on. Everyone is playing the same game, and you happen to be good at it. Don't insult our intelligence.

Frankly, this isn't very interesting. Some guy gets inspired to launch a startup, grows a company beyond the bare minimum, and we are supposed to swoon?

Come back when you have 150 employees and the competition is begging for mercy. Then sing to us about the blood sweat and tears.

People get inspired to launch startups all the time, and some of them become great businesses. Some of them fail miserably. Lets all do ourselves a favor and not praise effort before it bears fruit.
