I subscribe to a Telegram channel that posts the most recent posts on HN that meet a certain minimum karma threshold. Because it's a public channel, anyone can add emoji-based "reactions" to posts and have those reactions displayed for everyone else viewing to the channel.

The reactions as of 2025-26-25T21:51:30Z are as follows:

The only things I can think of as to why so many people are reacting with a kiss emoji are a. people think the distorted "new girl" is hot, or b. people think the author's fursona is hot

I'm personally rooting for the latter, but I'm biased (see website for proof)

The author admits at the end of the article that they aren’t absolute in their boycotts and that it’s hard to fully boycott certain things that are so prevalent within our lives.

It’s not that deep. Just be more mindful about what you do and what you use to do them, and you’ll find better ways to do them down the road that will make you and the people around you happier.

I’m surprised by how much this article reads like an opinion piece even though it isn’t.

As generative AI becomes harder to ignore, broader in scope, and even more dominant as a business trend… the people whose jobs are to write about how generative AI affects our lives have just had enough. They’re smart enough to see the writing on the wall, and now they’re trying desperately to transfer that writing onto their pages.

This seems like something you could make yourself for under $50. Pi Zero W2, battery, cheap LCD screen, and 3D-printed case. The only exceptions would be a) the extra physical buttons (requiring a custom PCB) and the amber backlight (not sure if you can get a screen that comes with one, or if you’d need to get it separately and install it yourself).

If I had more experience in making stuff like this (and money to buy the components and other tools I’ll need to make it), as soon as I saw the price of this thing I would have started making my own clone right away and thrown the code and hardware specs on GitHub.

It would be really cool to see more Mastodon instances that’s solely focused on people within a certain geographical area. It would be this but without the trendy startup energy.

Also if I don’t hear a single MTG Commander game come out of this project we have all failed as a species.

What kind of “value-generating” features are you thinking of?

One big comment I want to give on that front is, if you decide to try any generative AI features, please please please make them *completely opt-in* and integrate with *local models* (either completely or as an alternative to cloud models like GPT / Claude / etc). If I can use your software happily without being bombarded with ads for AI features and can use those AI features how I want to instead of how would best make you money, I would appreciate that so much.

I can’t read the actual article because I can’t find a way past the paywall… but I am fairly certain this is a political play.

If consumers see two products, one from China and another from Vietnam, both with their tariff markups listed, I have a feeling they’d pick the Vietnam product more often due to the lower markup. This makes Trump happy because he clearly wants us to stop buying Chinese products.

Honestly, I got bummed when I found out this was an electric vehicle, I wish there wasn’t a chance for my vehicle to get bricked through an over-the-air update, and I personally would like to have a basic stereo with an aux input just so I can listen to FM stations or Spotify while I haul a bunch of DIY materials around without having to install my own speakers.

you're right, it might not be intentionally malicious, but it still comes off as wrong due to the visual and mechanical design of the service. if you want to support smallweb, it's better to host a VPS service than a shittier linktree.

Remember that 80% of your time and resources is going to be spent finishing up the last 20% of the project. I’ve wanted to do the same thing you did but with coding notebooks (e. Jupyter) for a while now. It frustrates me to no end that the only native software for notebooks is JetBrains IDEA (and even that’s only an “I think it’s naive” lol). I've mostly been focusing on school right now, but my website https://eleboog.com has needed some more content for, uh, months lmao. So I'll probably try to make some new posts for it. Some topic ideas include Geminispace & cool ways people have made web apps with Gemini & related protocols, my tiny prose journal and how it's helped me with my mental health, and (of course) the random features I've added to my site over the past half-year and how I feel about them right now.

I know it ain't as exciting as y'all with your startups and open source softwares but I'm just a shmuck stuck in a CS degree that is guaranteed to leave me flipping burgers for a few years until the industry realizes hiring people is actually a good thing... I'm taking things as I go to build out my portfolio and hopefully work towards making my own open source apps that can hopefully land me a gig or two in the future.
