it's possible that Bitcoin is simply a relatively cheap Straw-man to initiate a real world trial of a global, all digital currency. experiment with the security, anonymity, market, boom/bust, acceptance.
under this scenario, there will be others until the system is "perfected" for a unified single global currency.
