2022 was a sad year

The scale at which we've traveled has also advanced with our technology, and the technology has also advanced with it - and it's increase with a pace that matches the overall progress of technology.

Columbus took 5 weeks to travel across the Atlantic with zero actual idea how long it would take.

The longest journey at sea without stops has been roughly 3 years.

We have people out on the ISS for 6m - 1y at a time.

Who knows how long it'll take for us to get to that point, but if we can survive the great filter, it's not unreasonable to think it'll take less than 1000 years to get to Mars based on the current trajectory. Probably a lot less.

re: who profits from this, got me thinking - even though $1m is a drop in the bucket of the market cap, could burning that amount of funds have any meaningful effect on the price? since the time of this transaction, prices have gone up 1.5% which is not huuuugely significant and causation != correlation

+1, it's gotten pretty easy to do bitcoin tracing these days IIRC. there's definitely cash out methods but for this large of a sum, seems like it'd be difficult?

hah humans are interesting! I'm the opposite. I love starting a codebase, I also make music and it's way easier for me to make 100 cool unique sketches live and improvised but not finish anything. it really takes all kinds

IDK, many people spend their whole lives glued to the TV or movies. it feels like it has only gotten worse. it also feels like people don't have hobbies these days. I think to convince people of what you're saying, we need to get people back into having more hobbies. or at least reading or something

worked in restaurants for years before moving to software engineering. despite being 'good' at coding, it screws me up a bit that I was a lot happier in many ways while working at a restaurant. i felt I had a lot more brain bandwidth for my personal activities outside of work, too

you're likely in the wrong project or too involved in phases of a project where your contribution can't move the needle significantly anymore

to expand on this, I've found most of my happiness as a generalist in early stage startups. to me, a larger company looking for a generalist with no concrete role is a sign that they don't have their stuff together. obviously there are exceptions to this rule - some companies just prefer generalists - but usually once teams get big enough, people settle into specific roles, even as a generalist.

No, it just means the person has the ability to purchase. They could be purchasing it for themselves or on the behalf of another organization.

The main cross platform open source offerings are GTK and QT.

There are lightweight electron alternatives - HTML/CSS engines with a scripting DSL. Sciter is a paid option but I know there are free options depending on your language of choice

I’ve been working on a cross platform music player and went with GTK over QT because I preferred the Rust bindings, QT seemed to have a lot of non UI code I didn’t need, and I was skeptical of dealing with QT licenses (but a lot of people seem to work with it just fine - I just didn’t put the research in to see if it was right for me).

Compiling linux / mac was very easy for me. Cross compiling linux -> windows via mingw64 was also pretty easy. I had some trouble compiling mingw64 on windows, but that was due to SQLite / MSys issues that I never really figured out.

Wild, this is the path I went down and it was just 3 months ago! I didn’t expect Fedora to become my daily driver so quickly.

I’m not sure about 5nm but I know they were targeting 7nm and something broke that set them back till 2022/23. Not looking good for intel

I’m sure there’s other projects happening in other places too, and they’re usually looking for volunteers - check out what’s going on in your town, and maybe start something if you can’t find anyone!

grappling with this myself these days. I would happily choose music over food years back. but once i started making code money, i got so comfortable. built up a whole world and « lifestyle » that now I (feel like I) have to maintain. and it feels like that’s how life continues to go as you accumulate a partner, pet, kids... you keep building up this house of cards that gets harder and harder to prevent from it all falling down. i dunno, sometimes I just wanna stop and run in the other direction because it feels like i’m doing it all wrong despite these being « markers of success ».

yeah, the democratization of knowledge was 100% worth it. the only thing we can do from here is try to make it better
