I think it would be a great idea for cost, but is not comparable to a properly-trained animal in most scenarios. My mother is blind and also has a cochlear implant (basically is just shy of being deaf) and has had a service dog for the last 7 years. The dog was in training for 18 months specifically to aid blind and deaf (combo) people, then my mother had to fly out East from Minnesota for 6 weeks just to train with it without the distractions of home. Her program was solid and both of the owner and dog know their roles very well. It would be extremely tough and cost prohibitive to do this without a track record and support structure behind the whole process.

Hey! I'm John and I'm a full-stack generalist web developer. Freelance for the last 12 years. I split my time about 75/25 between direct-to-client web software projects and CMS-driven website projects (Craft CMS, Expression Engine, custom PHP CMS, etc). Experience in jQuery, Backbone, React (React Native too) for front-end stuff - PHP, MySQL, Mongo, Elastic, etc for backend. My main focuses over the past few years have been medical software projects and audio management software.

PTRx.org - a web-based video delivery system for orthopedic providers to assign video prescriptions to their patients during recovery. Built an integration with Twilio's video and text chat aimed at HIPAA-compliant communication between providers and their patients. Backend built using CodeIgniter, Elastic, some API work with Zencoder and AWS.

The audio focused projects are all internal-network apps for commercial audio studio clients. They let commercial audio studios make their library of licensed tracks available for ad agencies, video production companies etc. Various workflows built out for billing, licensing, previewing tracks, etc. I'd be happy to show people around, but they're not publicly viewable. I currently have 3 clients using similar systems including 1 major "extreme sports" brand.

Facebook wouldn't likely exist if it wasn't for PHP. Zuck wrote something quickly in what he knew. They were able to deploy quickly, scale quickly, etc. Internally, they likely had the hope to migrate off of it at some point, but the business goals trumped the tech stack. From an outsiders point of view, no one cares about the tech problems they face with their tech stack.

VW is not in the same situation in the U.S. though. They have a lot of competition (they're not even in the top 10), so if they didn't do it in the the EU, but cheated on the U.S. models, there would be vastly differing output levels, signaling a discrepancy between the two models.

I do love that John's blog doesn't actually use jQuery itself (likely because it's not needed in this instance). Or any javascript for that matter, other than analytics...

So, what happened during the AWS outage this past Fall? Or did you restructure to provide failover beyond just moving platforms?

WebRTC is a huge one that comes to mind. With the App Store and Facetime in the same wheelhouse, there's no compelling reason to develop this area for Apple. It would be a HUGE win for the general web if they did, but there's zero reason for them to pursue it.

Service-based businesses are notoriously difficult to scale. I certainly make more on my own after a decade than I did when I had employees.

It doesn't have to be groundbreaking to make a boatload of cash. Think Purell.

Sorry, that wasn't what I had meant at all. I meant that if they're used to dealing with people who are constantly working the system, why would they ever go into their job thinking positive thoughts about the people they're dealing with. If she is the exception, she will likely be considered nefarious until proven otherwise, they just don't usually give the chance to actually prove anything, otherwise or not.

Considering who she was detained with ("I soon found myself locked in a room with a pedophile, a woman smuggling $25,000 in cash and unsavory others"), they were right perhaps to not give her the initial benefit of the doubt.

They won't use it for anything other than to raise the value of their valuation. If they court a buyer, all of that cash in hand just raised their buying price by $500m.

So, since there's really no difference between $10 for DO and $20 for Linode, what providers are out there that'll have a solid API or provisioning panel, a great network and great service? Doesn't matter if it's 50 bucks a month. Or 100. Anyone? What the heck do people use for business VPS hosting??

Yes, it stops at the top if there's enough public weight behind it. The guy was star struck about the work that could potentially go in his portfolio and was screwed because he didn't lock up contracts ahead of time. His post was a hail Mary since he didn't do pursue due diligence ahead of time. It sucks, especially since it happened to an individual, but he'll grow from this and learn what not to do.

ps: my cynicism isn't typical of midwesterners in the U.S. I've had many learning experiences over the years that are very similar to this. It all helped me become much better at running a business. If I hadn't had those experiences early on, I wouldn't know what to do preemptively now.

Yes, it's bad PR, but it's not Spike Lee's issue. Sure, he could be better at the PR angle, especially for a person in his current position, but considering how he got to his position, I would guess that good PR wasn't his forte.

As a 10 year freelancer, doing a ton of agency work, it's not Spike's issue. His production company hired an agency to do ad promotion for a movie he "helped" make. The design guy was star struck and fairly new in the freelance realm and didn't do a proper job with his business logistics.

It sucks, but it's not Spike Lee's issue. It's like blaming Obama for how a vendor screwed some engineer over while setting up the version control system during the build of the ACA site.

I don't see this topic as being any different than any other business pursuit. As a general rule, it takes money to make money. The very pervasive and (extremely) unlikely perception that your company can "make it" overnight just by building something well only holds those companies back. Create a solid business plan, building a product that is "good enough" and backing it up with a marketing budget has been a tried and true method for decades. The perception is only further deformed by what we see in the media (Instagram being sold for billions, SnapChat being wooed, the Twitter IPO, etc). The quicker you realize that it's harder than a cold day in hell, the quicker you'll pick your business idea off of the ground and make something based on a smart business plan.

Build a system with what seems to be a good, logical set of usage assumptions and you will find that once it's out in the wild, you will get people trying all kinds of different ways of using your system. It defies your own logic, but humans aren't that logical (usually). Being too clever with your assumptions usually backfires.

Considering that developers are usually the ones that recommend hosting decisions to their clients (since the clients generally have no clue about who to go with), they just chopped off the main artery of their business with this sale. Kudos to the MT founders, but GoDaddy just overpaid for something that might be a skeleton company within a few months.

At least they signed on the line before the news broke. And hope that it was a cash-only deal, since the value had probably dropped once that went to the wire.

Not quite "all" the character... it's great in many ways (awesome biking infrastructure, very affordable housing, great restaurants/bars/coffee), but there's a huge upside to the weather that San Francisco has. Perhaps as a cause and effect situation, Minneapolis also doesn't have the talent pool that the bay area has.

It's perhaps because they pushed a whole UI redesign out in the matter of a few months. And it's multilingual. And it cannot take into account 3rd-party apps and their inconsistent designs.

I wonder if it extends beyond Amazon, since my gmail now doesn't pull anything up after 2009, web or IMAP.
