I understand the stupidity in today's internet is out of proportions, but Muslims themselves burn Quoran to dispose of it. The sole intention of the losers here is to insult a large group of people. The retaliation is coming in several forms including the call to bankrupt such miningless countries and that's a good thing. The exact reason why Denmark and Sweden are banning acts of hate speech against Muslims.

Now you are writing that (selective) hate speech should be free and protected and all retaliations should be banned.. which is funny because it's not how the world works and you don't get to dictate the rules.

can an AI build an entire functioning backend with tests, DBs, queues, ..?

can an AI debug/profile/.. entire distributed backend, find what's wrong and add at least one integration test so it won't happen again?

can an AI setup all the devops pipelines, setup monitoring and alerting?

can management trust what an AI spits and put it in prod?

if the answer is no to one or more to the above, then my job is secure.

Probably a pill hard to swallow for HR, I would never be more productive than from my home. I put weeks tweaking my environment for maximum productivity, I will never shy off from wearing comfy clothes and using the washroom, adjusting temperature as needed (as somebody with a higher metabolism than average). Working remotely I am being askded about the progress of work rather than why I left 5min earlier..

I understand it works better for companies too, larger talent pool, reduced costs. The negatively affected entities are neither the employees nor the the employers.

it's the cycle of civilizations and English got a turn, I agree that's the way. But the issue for most places is the fear to loose their language and identity slowly.. Pushing their own language in schools and universities is a way to keep it alive but does sacrifice people and leave them behind.. I come from a place where English is the third language and I can see the pain of brilliant people left behind because of that.

The struggle is real, while I was in academia, I got to know brilliant people who didn't make it far enough because they had it in their own native language for too long and it became too late to invest a year or so working on their English..

we use the number of closed tasks/user stories but also came across people gaming those too. Lower the scope and cut corners (shitty design, superficial meaningless unit tests, ...). The point I understood, is stay away from people gaming things and have a management tech savy too.. I wroked in a company where the CTO is tech illeterate and everyone is gaming everything, I worked somewhere else where the CTO is the smartest and most tech savy person I have ever met and gaming anything there becomes obvious and people are shown the door out of nowhere (yet for a good reason).

One of the main criteria for picking up a product in my workplace is the product taking the free software path and companies self hosting their own free software product.. We did it with the Graphana labs, Elasticsearch, ... We are paying anyways for such services so now we are Using a service + contributing indirectly to its free software business path and we love it.

FDroid is fantastic, all the apps are straight to the point, most of my utilities are now from there, email client, vpn client, call, sms, IM, browser, ... If I need something I start from there. I would love to go for LineageOS or GrapheneOS, just trying to make sure I have banking apps backup in an older phone before fully committing to it.

Just to say, it's not as simple as authoritarian vs not, it's mote like, authoritarian and didn't get the green light vs not.

I use a substantial amount of those products except IDEs (I just use neovim).

When I was forced to use mainstream IDEs, I was thinking it's okay, just slap vim extension and it should be the same. However, I forgot that my snippets are not there, advanced semantic navigation and refactoring is not handled the way vim does with the config and extensions, ... The conclusion was that, it will look like Vim but it's definitely not the same.

Yeah, common primitive sense is "big words". You understand that competitiveness and cloud certificatios based on some sort of a measurements of those "big words". I wonder how B2B or B2C is a decisive choice.

Probably I don't know enough to argue, but those are the repeated arguments and which I agree with. In my current place, I know we can reduce the infra bill significantly if we move to renting physical servers or VPSs, but nobody would like to gamble on the "big words" (availability,..). We already have a system to deal with downtime in one region but it will take much more efforts that would lead to a minicloud if we want to go with the dedicated hosting.

you clearly have no idea how things work outside of hobby projects, what about reliability? scalability, guaranteed uptime, resolving incidences,... You can account for all for that for yourself by creating a mini cloud provider.. good luck with that

I don't know what spoiled your day but corporations are going to do what they need to do to make profits, lower the costs to stay competitive. I thought, before reading your comment, this is basic knowledge. Apple and the rest made big sacrifice to move/hire offshore so you can still buy that iPhone for sub 1000 usd, the story will be completely different otherwise. A 4k iPhone would be something that a few Americans will buy and no non-american will buy, just so they can pay 6 digits salary to engineers and 8 to CEOs of the 100% US workforce.

That's a valid perspective, but remember that the quality degraded when we started having paid memberships and ads to websites.

That business model really proved to be worthless, it dragged the quality down with more desperate pay-to-read prompts. Nobody will miss this and we will have again people with real world experience writing knowledge or opinions in their free time. So it goes back to that, quoting scientific papers, books and actual reputable and knowledgeable people writing blog posts.

With the news being mostly propaganda, I don't know what to quote there and how many outlets still have a reputation.

I personally write during my free time in my personal ad-free minimalistic website and have list of blogs I track for contents.

Things changes, waiting for full time "authors" to come up with a profitable plan to just progress is also not an option.

I think so yes, and it's also nice IMO. Probably search won't be about receiving 10,000 search results, but about 1 concise, justified answer backed by actual sources.

That's a valid perspective IMO but corporations are too slow to react and keep up.. Another thing is, if models that are good enough for the general use case that I can fit in my medium range hardware then I definitely don't need to pay for the more perfect one.. A couple of such good enough models are already there and a lot of us are already not following or waiting for the GPT-10.. That's the point of the article and why OpenAI are visibly insecure about those models.
