During the 08 financial crisis, Mitsubishi wrote a $9 billion CHECK to close an investment in Morgan Stanley over a holiday weekend. The concern was that MS's stock would nosedive if the deal wasn't done before the market opened. The check was apparently enough to legally close the deal on a weekend when it wasn't possible to wire funds.

Yeah, same here. I'm not sure if the first PC I built was from Fry's parts but the second+ definitely were. I used to love going there in the late 90s-early 2000s – they put a lot of effort into demo areas/displays back then and the selection was unbeatable, especially for components and things that Best Buy wouldn't (and doesn't) even bother with. I get that paying retail rents to stock $2 patch cables doesn't work these days but I will miss it.

I would have paid a lot of money for that back in the pre-CSS days, assuming it worked well. Was it purely image-based or could it recognize when an area could be rendered without using an image (like a single color zone/etc.)?

Been reading Matt's work since the Dealbreaker days and agree 100%. It's rare to see someone pull off being genuinely funny when (knowledgeably!) writing about financial and legal mechanics.

Matt once wrote about something I was working on. His analysis was way more on-point and technically accurate than that of any other article I read about it. I wanted to email him at the time but like you wasn't exactly in a position to talk to a journalist.

100%. Coda was especially useful if you weren't running your server stack on your local dev machine. Hit "Publish" and all your changed files are pushed up automatically. So much better than hunting through an FTP client every time you make a small edit.

PSA being down is interesting. I might have thought there would be greater demand for storage units as people clear stuff out of their houses to make room for home offices/gyms/etc.

I used to have a terminal and still work with some of Bloomberg's data products. A big part of their value proposition isn't so much the functionality of the terminal (though it's really extensive, and they keep adding stuff over time) but the breadth of data you can get through it. Not all of it is easily available and/or indexed elsewhere – I've heard Bloomberg literally has teams of people that hand-enter some of the more esoteric stuff. They also do things like create/maintain their own synthetic bond indexes fed from proprietary valuation models. Would take a ton of time/money to EEE all that.

And yeah, it's actually pretty extensible. There's a mechanism to create apps for the terminal, though I never really used those. Bloomberg will also sell you a programmatically-accessible data feed of pretty much anything they have, although those can cost well into six figures annually.

Parking is really expensive in a lot of cities. Easily $40/night+ if you're leaving a car at your hotel, plus you have to pay to park while sightseeing/etc.

No, he’s right. The EV credit is not refundable* so your tax liability has to be at least $7500 to get the full benefit of it.

Corporate governance was definitely a factor, but getting cut down from $47B to $10-15B is... a lot. Public market investors clearly have a much worse opinion of We's fundamentals than SoftBank did.

Same, I own a 2014 15" and have a 2018 15" from work. I haven't had any keys break on the 2018 (yet...) and actually prefer the key travel on it to the 2014. The smaller size is an improvement and the dongle situation isn't a problem for my use cases. Not a fan of the keyboard layout and TouchBar, though.

If Apple let me spec a physical ESC key, inverted-T arrow keys, and native 1920x1200 point screen size @2x on the existing form factor I'd be VERY happy. Assuming, of course, the keyboard is actually reliable.

Odd, Kaiser in CA was willing to send a secure email (I assume that meant an email containing a web link) with my vaccination history when I started grad school at NYU in 2015.

To your larger point of what a mess this is, though: NYU refused to accept a vaccination history that didn't have a "doctor's stamp" on it so wouldn't take the email. After unsuccessfully trying to get a doctor to sign off on my vaccination history, I realized it would be easier to just get re-immunized. Luckily the health center charged less than $100 for that, but the whole thing was still way more annoying than it should have been.

Right, and the best argument I've heard for letting T-Mobile and Sprint merge is that there's a real question of whether Sprint continues to exist absent a merger. Could be better to have 3 strong carriers competing than 2 strong ones, one weaker one, and one on the brink.

Granted, this is part of how TM/Sprint are trying to sell this to the DOJ, so worth taking it with a grain of salt.

Laravel also as a lightweight version called Lumen for simpler APIs and things. It includes a lot of the features of core Laravel but has a more stripped-down application structure.

I mean, that's a valid point in the age of Wix and Squarespace. I'm certainly glad I'm no longer in the business of building brochureware sites for small clients.

I understand your larger point that we shouldn't be quick to assume a realtor's work is not difficult. However, I think the issue is the buyer doesn't really have the option to forego the buyer's agent service and capture (through a reduced price) the commission that would have otherwise been paid. Not everyone needs a full-service realtor in the same way not everyone needs a bespoke CMS.

It's also rumored that United lost a lot of entertainment business when they killed their LAX-JFK service and moved everything to Newark. AA still flies a 3-class plane on LAX/SFO-JFK with lie-flat seats in business and first.

Theoretically, yeah, but like a lot of tech companies, index funds are a high-ish fixed cost and low marginal cost business. The staff/IT/compliance/etc. costs to run a fund don't scale linearly with invested assets so functionally a million tiny funds would be much more expensive to operate (collectively) than one big one. You'd have to have somebody at each fund voting in all those shareholder votes, right?
