whims of a private American corporation

Exactly. Private corporations that adhere to US law and have demonstrated that they don't operate in good faith.

Each country should control official channels of communication.

If you criticize the Corona measure you are a Nazi, if you criticize the Ukraine war you are a Russian troll?

These notions are propagated by the US to the rest of the world. While EU politicians seem to go along, europeans do not tolerate it much and that much is reflected in society.

If the EU or more gov sponsored search engines pop up, i have no doubt they will want to control them in their own way - i'm okay with that. Right now our only option is US controlled entities that answer to US govs and rules.

At least here we can point fingers and hold politicians accountable if they try to influence things the wrong way. We can't do that with US companies.

open source as a whole sucks at building products, but is great at building infrastructure

Infrastructure you can trust. Most close sourced tech will lock you in and you're at their mercy - no thanks.

Not just Google Cloud, any google service in general. If you have a problem or one of their "AI" systems locks you out, then you're out. No way to resolve the issue.

Same thing happened with Medium. Initially it had thoughtful content and once the platform became more popular, it also attracted worse content.

Typical articles:

How to build and Android app.

1. Learn android

2. Find and idea.

3. Build the app.

Thanks for reading this. Follow me on Twatter etc....

They basically baited you to open the link with an interesting title and the content had no substance.

iPadOS 16 4 years ago

Seriously. I really wanted to buy an iPad but then realised i have no use for it.

It's not as good as my laptop and the functionality in every aspect is still very limited. The only unique feature is drawing/notes which might work for artists but paper is good enough for me.

I want to like it but for now it's still a giant iphone with a pen.

I'm seasoned enough with burnouts and the best cure is indeed to quit (for a while).

Last year, nearing summer - i quit my job and didn't touch my laptop for 3 months.

Resumed during fall with a fresh mind and lots of energy to code again.
