You can control the mute in software using the Arduino USB keyboard library, then just send the appropriate key combination when the button is pressed:

For MS Teams, you send Ctrl+Shift+M (Cmd+Shift+M for Mac) For Google Meet you send Ctrl+D (Cmd+D for Mac) For Zoom, you send Alt+A (Cmd+Shift+A for Mac)

Note that unlike Telephony devices, which can return the status of the mute on the computer, there is no way to tell if the software itself is muted.

I suspect there is an age trigger in Ubuntu (and distributions that use Ubuntu as a base, like Linux Mint) that sets up this ad for older installs of Ubuntu so you can pay for extended updates for 10 years.

Remove the execute bit from these two files and you shouldn't see the message again: sudo chmod -x /etc/update-motd.d/88-esm-available /etc/update-motd.d/91-contract-ua-esm-status

As you say, they are streaming the content and therefore there are streaming rights involved regardless how they stream the content.

Consider for a moment that Netflix offered that service, how would you choose the menu options on that DVD? You'd have to wade through all those copyright warnings and adverts you can't skip. You'd have to pay more for the power consumption of the DVD player. Consider if every consumer had this service, how big would their warehouse have to be to store all the DVD players along with their collection of DVDs to play?

It would be a logistical nightmare for Netflix.

The biggest one I can think of is accessibility first. We have mobile first, but accessibility first is about designing systems for those who have vision; mobility; cognitive and hearing problems as well as the ageing population.
