Came to say something about the ads too. Ended up not even reading the article it was so bad.

Tell the people the government is inefficient and cannot work as intended. Defund said government so it doesn't work as intended. Privatize the work and profit. A playbook as old as time. Except they are doing it bigger and more brazenly than ever.

Yeah this is just a "Don't use Signal. Use our alternative instead."

But highly processed refined carbohydrates are sugar as well. Or at least converted to glucose. We are told, however, that carbs are part of the balanced diet. While that is true the right kind of carbs are important. So people think they are being healthy while loading themselves up with poor quality carbs that are in fact quite unhealthy.

I mean isn't that a fair question all around? Why pay more for a high end laptop when you can just buy a cheap chromebook? The myth that ChromeOS is just a web browser is just that a myth. It can do so much more. Some people like a high end laptop, but also prefer the safety and security that ChromeOS provides. I owned a Pixelbook and loved it. Honestly still miss it. I would absolutely buy another high end ChromeOS device.

What if my surgeon went to med school and was top of class, but had an attending who insisted on using the wrong tools? Or there was another surgeon on the team who created the "architecture" for a brain surgery, but for some reason in order to get to the brain they went through the chest. There can be many reasons for unreliable and buggy software that are completely unrelated to the developer.

I cannot speak to Germany or California, but I can speak to being close to family. I know that has been invaluable to my wife and I. We were only 4.5 hours away when we first had our kids, but it seemed like a million miles. It was hard not having support or even just to drop the kids with family to run an errand or go to an appointment. After being back it is just amazing to have family close. Having that love, help and support will ease a lot of burdens. Even in a small village remote work should be an option. I would assume (but obviously don't know) that a small village in Germany has a lower cost of living than California so you should still be able to build wealth if you both get decent jobs. Just remember money isn't everything, and having family close will ease many of those burdens.

So you think them doing something they enjoy together is a life wasted? Why call someone else's choices wasting. I enjoy spending time with my kids and doing things with family. Should I tell a couple with no kids who travel they are wasting their lives by not having a family or am I the one wasting my life by not traveling? Seriously to each their own. Let people live without judging. How much life are you wasting by browsing HN?

The beauty is when you build your own OS with it's own desktop environment, and browser and tools from scratch you can use the language you feel is appropriate. Would you write a brand new project in a language you don't feel comfortable with just because it is perceived as "safer"? Especially when the project was just for fun, and really to help the creator get through some tough times in their life. Like he didn't start the project to compete with mainstream OSes or browsers. This is just a terrible take especially considering you probably use an OS written in C and a browser written in C++.

I know all my children under the age of 4 (3 of them) are able to receive a flu vaccine though. I would assume quite a few parents are doing the same. So not quite apples to apples. That being said the risk to children that age for COVID is quite low, and I would not be shutting down schools or even forcing masks. Those are important to development of children especially since it disproportionally affects low income children. So I agree that the risk of COVID to children is small, and extreme measures should not be taken. My only issue was comparing two things that probably cannot fairly be compared.

So that link you sent says there is 12.6 instances per million doses. So that is 0.00126% chance of happening. This article from March mentions around 22 per 100,000 chance from getting COVID. Much larger incidence rate. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7988375/ Now obviously might not be the same age ranges or such, but I do know last year the Big-10 almost cancelled it's football season due to myocarditis risk from COVID so clearly it has been an issue for a while. Might need to weigh that in the decision you make for your children. Too many people look for one side and use that to prove their point otherwise know as confirmation bias. I would study the incidence of both sides of this before making the decision. Although my children are less than 5 so they can't get it yet anyway.

The goal of most politicians from either party is to pit Americans against each other instead of against the corrupt system. This way the politicians and the actual ruling class (billionaires and corporations) can keep their power all while making it seem like the other team is the true enemy. Unfortunately Americans are buying it hook, line and sinker.

The reliance on a three button mouse, which makes it impossible to use Plan 9 on a modern laptop without finagling with modifier keys (no, I don't want to go back to using a mouse, thanks).

Thinkpad ;)

Honestly, if the decision to not get a vaccine because you are young and healthy only affected you then your argument would make sense. Why are there laws against drunk driving? It isn't to solely protect the driver from injuring themselves correct?

Edit: BTW I do not support mandated COVID vaccination. I just wish more people would think of the societal good instead of "muh freedoms" when making choices. Especially when certain side effects of vaccines actually happen at a higher incidence rate from getting COVID then from the vaccine (I.E. myocarditis).

I am a person who did that swap on my T480s with the glass trackpad. It is glorious. Easy to do and cannot recommend enough. Also very much satisfied with the T480s and I am a notorious laptop hopper. Although the System76's with Coreboot are starting to creep into my mind, but I know the quality will not be near that of the Lenovo.
