If you have relatives from Europe look into citizenship via decent. My grandmother was born in Ireland and I was able to acquire Irish citizenship because of that. Now I have dual US/Irish citizenship

My wife still teaches "Consumer and Family Studies" in one of the few school systems here that still has that curriculum. From how amazed the kids are that you can prepare things from scratch I don't think there are too many parents and grandmothers out there cooking dinner. Mostly takeout and packaged goods.

PBS has a secondary channel here called Create that runs a lot of the older cooking shows during the evening and prime-time hours. Maybe take a look and see if it available in your area.

The S&P is growing because companies are borrowing to buy back their stock. It is illegal stock manipulation but that law is no longer enforced. This makes money that used to be taxed as dividends eligible for capital gains treatment and it taxed at a lower rate than it would be as dividends. this lowers tax income to the government. A downward spiral with no end in sight.

Disgusting. A bitter old man with a Don Quixote complex thinking he is going to ride in and save the day in a brokered convention.

Just look at the US tax code to figure out why most of the money in the hands of old white people. The tax benefits of IRA/401K accounts really favor people who have the guts to cut back on consumption and save over the years. That is all money that didn't get spent. Some say it increased the savings rate but did the increased savings really help the country?

"The people who generally have their financial shit together don't usually realize when it's pay day." isn't a specious argument. You would have enough to pay your bills whether or not you got paid for a multiple of months. An emergency fund that covers 6 months of expenses is the first step to having your financial shit in order. If you can manage that it gets easier.

They only time I notice I got paid is when I make a ATM withdrawal and see the balance go up.

An interesting post on a board the almost solely exists to help people find private equity investments.

Leveraged buyouts <> private equity. It is just one form of it. Sometimes the money is borrowed from investors who expect a return on their money. Listen to the horror stories here about diluted shares on a buy out. Whoever lends the money has the leverage.

Which is why tax flight would be a big risk.It compounds over time. You pay taxes on the same money year after year. Nevermind what happens if you save even more. Why stay in an economy that is dying from taxation when you could move to an area with a vibrant economy and avoid the tax.

The US and UK are slowly becoming dinosaurs. The amount of taxes they need to keep functioning as handout societies will be the end of them.

That is a tax that never made sense to me. I know they do it because it is easy to quantify equipment but once you start taxing the means of production all you get is less production and less means of production to tax.

And yet as an older citizen of HN I am very concerned about privacy, enough that I use cash for at least half my purchases. Cash is wonderful because cash is anonymous.

I wise boss I had one time told me "Don't worry about the banks and US government and your privacy, they don't have the ability to actually do anything with it. You should worry about Google getting your information."

I bought my first house in 1984. Banks were begging you to take out a mortgage and prices were in the tank. I bought the house with 5% down, PMI and a 14 percent, 1 year adjustable mortgage (interest rates were so high they had to go down). When rates went down property values soared and I was able to use the gain to finance most of the purchase of my next house.

My advice is take advantage of the low interest rates if you can. You have to live somewhere and the mortgage payments are a form of forced savings and partially subsidized by the US government.

OK, I'm confused. Are you saying that it would have been better for Honduras to allow Zelaya to install himself as a dictator for life, Chavez style?

They deserve a lot of praise for defending their constitution without violence. The interim president stepped down when he said he would and did not run for the office. Elections went off without problems. It should serve as an example for the rest of the world.

It has been that way for years, at least since Windows 3.1. You trade off skill in programming for speed and memory usage in programming via GUI tools that do an OK job but not great.I'm not sure it is better but it does make programming available to much less skilled employees that you don't have to pay as much.

We used to run 20-30 user green screen systems on UNIX (386 Interactive) with 256K of memory. It would never happen today. Most systems won't boot with less than a gig of memory.

I the US I can think of two.

Number one: you are in charge of you life and education. Don't depend on teachers to teach you everything or the government to guarantee your happiness.

Number two: learn to accept criticism and act on it. You won't get much of it during your years in school but you will get it eventually. It isn't the worst thing in the world and you might benefit from it if you don't just react against it.

There are a lot of ways to get through college without being in debt for 5 or 6 figures. Too many people think that it matters where they went to school rather than what they actually learned at the school they went to.

I worked at a college and saw how ugly the guts of "enrollment management" is. Too many "full pays" get put into special programs so that their SAT scores don't get counted by the "US World and News Report" college rankings.

I told my kids to sell their grades and SAT scores to the highest bidder and work hard at the college that gave them the most money. They will come out ahead of people that are enamored of their egos and not be in debt up to their eyebrows. They all finished their undergrad on time or early, they all got into grad school and they all will finish their graduate degrees on time.
