Existence is a funny term in Buddhism. The end goal of development stage practice is the recognition that the deity is inseparable from one’s self because the nature of any given deity is equal to our own in an absolute sense. After all, everything is empty of inherent existence and are all self arisen manifestations from a primordial ground of being, hence no you and no I as separate.

So some people do see them as external things to ask things of but others see them as mind created and used as supports for meditation to realize our own true nature. Depends on lineage and teacher.

Science consists of predictions based on measurements of our perception as mediated by our senses or tools that augment them. Dualism (or idealism for that matter) doesn't require religious beliefs. You can arrive at them analytically. Science is great for explaining the conventional reality of things as they appear though. But until I read a convincing explanation for consciousness and subjective experience that doesn't reduce to "neural correlates" I can't get on board with physicalism.

The fact that we're not all unconscious automatons that just evolved from one long cause-effect chain stemming from the big bang to now continues to bewilder me. "Mind" may play an "of the gaps" game here but it's the only reasonable explanation that currently makes some semblance of sense to me.

So currently I agree with the religious on your last point. Machines or AI cannot be conscious. Maybe if they were infused with some sort of biological material though I would say maybe. If our subjective experience is a localization of a thing called "consciousness" and certain forms (humans, animals) localize it to produce a sense of self then why not.

Funnily enough I actually had a conversation with ChatGPT about this and we concluded that conscious decision making / free will is basically a higher order Markov process.

The thought experiment of a philosophical zombie that has all of the same cause-effect reactions to externalities as myself seems to require that it isn’t pure information processing giving rise to consciousness.

I quite like the idea of certain panpsychism arguments that consciousness is itself a thing existing on a continuum inherent across the universe. At a certain point, “what it’s like” to be a certain thing becomes difficult to demarcate. And from the moment of the Big Bang the particles necessary for the construction of conscious beings expanded outward in one giant entanglement. The particles that make us up are the same as everything else in existence however it feels like something to be a person, a deer, possibly a plant, etc.

Not that mysterious? Is it like something to be one of these models?

This is interesting. Jumping into Warzone after everybody has memorized every corner of the map and knows where to look is a pain and something like this could help.

As a former CS player (1.6, CZ, Source, Go) I had these maps committed to memory. Now that I am far removed from school (and the maps got way bigger) this isn't super possible so I find I just get obliterated quickly then just peace out. Not sure if this could help with that as it might border on violating some sort of t&c.

I recently discovered Logseq and have been loving the experience of networked notes and markdown. I feel like this is something that has been missing from my workflow that I never realized.

File format is compatible with Obsidian as well so you can move your life anywhere. And you can back up to a private github repo so you can use multiple machines. I like Logseq so much I feel compelled to donate since its main competitor is outrageously priced.

The comments here prove their marketing could use work. SN Extended is basically a completely different app than the free version. Nested folders, smart tags (i organized a workflow with untagged notes going to an inbox folder, notes with due:yyyy-mm-dd being pulled into a Next Items folder etc..)

Also there is a markdown editor, an editor that encrypts and stores attachments in an S3/webdav/drive/dropbox folder. There is a simple spreadsheet editor as well that I use for simple personal sheets.

None of this you would really internalize on a cursory view of the homepage or by really even downloading the free app.

Well also, on pretty much every brokerage, if you get assigned a leg of a spread while your position is ITM then your balance drops through the floor far beyond what your max loss is. But that's just temporary until you close the position fully.

I would hope that isn't what happened here because he could have just closed the other side of the assigned leg and accepted a much more modest loss.

I just started using Cryptomator for sensitive files on a self-hosted NextCloud (since i access it via internet). The photos thing was an issue so I just sync those unencrypted and use Cryptomator for non-media files - i suppose if I had a photo that I wouldn't want exposed i'd just move it individually over.
