It's opt-in. My guess is that the gap between people willing to install an add-in and people willing to dig into their settings and check a box is not large.
If you clear metadata, the following pathological case results in an inconsistent read:
* x = 0 and y = 0, starting out in the "good" state with metadata cleared;
* client A reads x with no metadata, then for whatever reason blocks or is delayed;
* client B writes x = 1 and y = 1, completes the transaction, and the metadata is cleared;
* client A reads y = 1.
This shouldn't be an issue unless you aggressively clear metadata and have a long-running client.
Next time you see a story about sexism against women (redundant but needs the clarification here anyway), watch its movement. Yeah, it may get up in the top for a bit, but you can watch stories that are older with fewer points and comments move up above it. Happens every time.

I'd prefer for it to not. It's better to use nginx or stud to provide HTTPS on top of an HTTP app.

* If you jailbreak you are forever a fugitive. You can never again just update, you have to wait and make sure it doesn't kill your setup. You can end up losing your warranty, be refused tech support, etc.

I agree with the rest of your points. I also have a similar story, but instead of going to OS X, I just started installing Ubuntu and using the defaults without customization. And that's the way I primarily use my devices. I just think it's ridiculous we're even having this discussion about whether people should have full ownership of devices they've paid for.

Decimals _are_ a subset of the rationals. Any rational whose denominator has a prime factor other than 2 or 5 cannot be written using decimals.
