I'm a grad student at UC - Santa Cruz working on large-scale storage systems. Most of my work revolves around in-situ processing, array-based processing and parallel file systems.

Does the whole "onto usb stick" really mean much these days? I'd hope you could get a software stack onto 8 (16, 32, ...) GB of storage.

Also, that article is quite light on details (as has already been stated)

The disposable academic: Why doing a PhD is often a waste of time 16 years ago

As a third year Ph D student I'd say that it's on the student to make the most out of their time in school. Part of that is networking, meeting people in related fields and mastering some of the softer sciences (presentations, writing style, etc.) A student that fails to build connections seems no different to me than the student that didn't gain as much knowledge from their courses or didn't master writing because they didn't have to.
