Ugh, thought at first you might be just being mean but a quick look at its other comments 100% confirms. I don’t understand — what’s even the point of such comment slop. I mean on Reddit it’s for karma and selling accounts or whatever. But here on HN?

Also, really the holy grail of YouTubers — he’s not concerned with clicks or retention. He has a day job, he’s not trying to do this full time or make a career out of it. I’ve been following him for years. Legitimately just an insanely smart person doing projects on his own time he thinks are interesting and that he thinks other people might be interested in too. It’s kinda crazy when it’s as simple as that with no ulterior motives or incentives.

Bad calls are not “soul”. There’s plenty of flair and tradition and flavor in baseball.

To be a bit pedantic, I think that YouTube sponsors aren't necessarily scams, but are definitely not generally good products or deals. It's a spectrum.

Talk about living rent free…the number of modern songs which are (generally obliviously) derivative of Pachelbel's Canon in D is mind boggling, which itself was surely built upon even earlier, similar chord progressions.

My favorite exchange from the movie is when Jonesy brings his report to the captain. He's aware of how crazy this theory sounds, especially when his very serious and hard-to-read captain rephrases it back to him. Jonesy starts getting nervous and fumbling and Mancuso cuts him off -- "Relax, Jonesy. You sold me." Not quite sure why that simple line hits so hard.

The best is when they use flimsy arguments about needing to "make an example" or "discourage this behavior" or "create a deterrent", as if people in these situations are even aware they're doing anything wrong.

This quote really drives home the point that the overwhelmingly vast majority of scientific discovery and progress throughout history has come with humanity's entirely self-inflicted handicapping, like a V8 engine running on only 1 cylinder. Can't help but wonder what our knowledge here in 2025 would be like had we, as a species, tapped into our full potential by empowering women and people of color (to name just a few categories) earlier. You can almost see it in action with the people mentioned here as time went on.

To be clear, I'm personally of the "nazis need to be punched in the face" mindset, but I still love this quote. Life is nuanced and people are complex. Even Solzhenitsyn knew.
