Is this a common issue? I deleted mine around the same time. I recently moved to a small town where many of the restaurants and businesses use Facebook which kind of forced me back on. When I tried creating a new one the same thing happened, and there was no way of reversing this decision.

It's been said before but I do believe that most people generally believe the 'best era' was the time around when they started watching - likely high school or around then.

I've watched for 20 years, every era is the same and it's exactly as you describe. A couple decent skits and many that don't hit. The one difference I've found lately is many of the sketches are for a terminally online generation - Bowen Yang in particular leading the charge. As someone with no social media, those sketches go over my head but I can't really hate on it, as I just recognize that I'm getting old haha.

I would happily pay for a dumb TV, if they existed. They don't seem to anymore.

I have a Samsung Q-series TV now and tried using the smart TV apps for a while, but many were buggy and often had audio/video desync issues. I might blame part of that on the soundbar, but I gave up and got an Apple TV 4K and haven't had any issues at all.

Not really. You can do that for web, or email, or maps, but for the most part - and especially with third party apps for things like Reddit, or Twitter - you're forced into opening links in Safari. You MAY be given the option to open the link in an app once opening in Safari but in my experience it doesn't always work.

It's fundamentally a worse experience than it is on Android, in every way.

so will I finally be able to open a link in one app that opens in another app and not in safari?

Google's now playing feature is somehow always offline (to relieve privacy concerns) and is somehow still incredible at recognizing even obscure songs. Really impressive.

I also love that it just shows up on my lock screen.

The funds are already there. It's not an additional amount, but just a % of the overall agencies budget.

I also personally don't have an issue with the VC fund ownership rules but my industry (biotech) necessitates it more than maybe others.

Also in DC. The jobs are coming back but the work is still remote. My office has moved to hybrid schedule of 3 days in office (tues-thurs) and remote Mon, Fri. I know many other offices that are still remote however, and only just now starting to discuss RTO procedures.

Not to mention "core hours" becoming a thing even on in-person days for many offices meaning it's no longer as much of a thing to get out of the office for lunch at noon if you're only there until 3 or 4.

Definitely true about most subs, but not all. Some, such as /r/askhistorians, are very strict about low effort posts so what you end up seeing (amongst a handful of deleted replies) are very well resourced to whatever the subject of the thread is. Of course, this requires an engaged moderating team which not all subs have. That being said, it still doesn't quite match the magic of stumbleupon and clicking a link to be shown a page matching your interests from obscure corner of the web.

To be honest, I don't know why a similar app or extension hasn't come up to replace what Stumble did. Surely there's advertising potential there (1 ad per every X clicks) and even a subscription option (remove ads or access to unlimited interest categories for $x dollars).

I wish Stumble Upon still existed just so I could find the weird corners of the web again. This site and Reddit sort of fill that but also don't quite fit it at all.

There were a few points in the doc where some of the Beatles would come in saying "I was thinking about this song last night while watching TV" and they'd hum it out or play some of the notes in their head on the piano. We saw Paul mess around with the guitar in real time as he slowly put together the chords for Get Back. Moments like this, to me, feel like times where that natural talent is necessary.

Looking at the chart toward the top of the article, I couldn't help but get a similar feeling. A huge spike of self employed workers in the early 2000's that preceded the crash and Great Recession. I'd be curious to see statistics on what these self employed workers were doing in 2004-2007, but I assume many of them got into the idea of flipping houses?

Either way, I worry that in a few years time we'll see a market correction of all these self employed workers and I wonder what its impact will be. Will they just go back to corporate life? Will it even be that easy to do so?

The US govt is certainly still involved in propaganda. For example, NASA helped with The Martian.[1] DoD released a game, America's Army, about 20 years ago with a total budget of $32 million over 8 years or so.[2] Also, Pentagon pays about $10-15 million annually just for the various pro-military messaging we see at sports events (salute to veterans, etc).[3] These are just some examples, but there are plenty more.

The same way people underestimate their caloric intake, I think unfortunately a lot of fitness apps and equipment overestimate calories burned. A recent 1 hr peloton class I did said said I burned a little over 1,200 calories. It was nearly 300 more than my Whoop band said I lost. I think both numbers were higher than what I actually did.

I wish it had a charger similar to the Whoop fitness band. It's a separate battery that you place on top of the band while wearing it, so it can charge while you're sleeping or even while you're just wearing it throughout the day.

You're taking a pretty pessimistic view of the funding and R&D process. A good idea with initial funding by the government is useless if the VC funding doesn't bring the idea to the finish line. The government can't afford to (and shouldn't) fund every good idea to their finish line.

I bought a Specialized Diverge over a year ago. It was mostly to commute to and from work, but also to have the ability to take gravel paths and trails on the weekends. It's been awesome but friends have suggested I take off the stock tires and add some new ones. Is it really worth it? The tires are already fairly fat already, at least compared to road bike tires.

Generally speaking, the smaller the subreddit the better the community. I really like the subreddit dedicated to my favorite baseball team. I like the /r/MLB subreddit too, but less so. The noise noise from everyone posting and trying to make the frontpage leads to an inevitable degradation in quality.

I remember a while back when /r/cfb was invited to join the front page and there was considerable pushback from members who were afraid the reddit-wide readership would ruin the quality of posts. Kind of an eternal september thing...

I love the bike. I ride (or take one of the strength classes, or yoga, or even just stretching) nearly every day, and have for a few months now. Before getting it my workouts were spotty..I'd be strict about working out for a week or two at a time and then fall off for a few weeks, rinse and repeat. I've actually lost close to 20lbs since getting it, though part of that is because I've cut down on drinking a bit.

I feel the social aspect is both the reason why I continue to ride but also really lacking. I have a group chat with friends who also have a Peloton and more often than not there's one or two that want to ride, so it's easy motivation to be like ok I'll jump on too. But also..it's difficult to actually follow friends and their progress as there's no real feed of any sort, just individual pages that you have to jump through a couple of menus to get to.

I'd love to see some cross between a Kindle and iPad..something focused on reading, but not necessarily books. At night I tend to browse various sites ranging from WaPo, Defector, The Athletic, and New Yorker, and others on my RSS feed and if I could do so on a simple eink tablet I'd probably reach for that more often than my phone or laptop.

Honestly if Feedly or a similar RSS reader came out with a dedicated eink reader it'd probably be a day one purchase for me, but maybe I'm in the minority.

It's bold of Peloton to assume that their cult is willing to go along with removing features from another cult.

I love my Peloton but don't have an Apple watch so I don't have a dog in this fight, but I have friends who do who really look to their Apple watch for HR/general fitness monitoring, and if the idea is to get people to adopt to the Peloton watch/wearable, well, that's gonna be a real tough battle to win.
