Point taken. It's not what I remember of CA in the 90's, when I was an analyst at a consulting firm. They may have changed strategy in the later aughts. Or, I could be completely wrong.

As you say, it was the place where products went to die.

Never thought I'd be able to say this, but Broadcom has out-CA'd Computer Associates.

For those not familiar with CA, their model was to buy up failed enterprise software companies and milk the s@*t out of the licensing and support contracts, while spending next-to-nothing on development. Broadcom follows much the same model with steroids and protein powder.

CA failed, only after years of profitable rent-seeking. The same may happen to Broadcom, but it will take years. In the meantime the companies who depend on the software they control will pay a heavy price.

It was dumber than that. Governor Raimondo worked out a loan with the Fenway group that bought the franchise that would keep the team in Pawtucket. The speaker of the House wouldn’t let the bill come to a vote, so the deal died. (I don’t remember his name; I do remember he was from West Warwick.)

I know of one: the U.S. Naval Observatory near Flagstaff, Arizona. I lived in Flagstaff in 1979. I knew the astronomer and visited him at the observatory at night. He showed me a terminal running Forth that could control the telescope.

What does "kernel" lisp refer to? Is it cl-jupyter, a kernel for Jupyter notebooks?

I don't have data, but I do have anecdotal evidence to contradict #1.

I live in upstate NY, where farm land is cheap (in relative terms). We are seeing an influx of Amish, who can no longer afford land in Ohio and Pennsylvania. (To be clear, they might be able to afford land, but at such a cost as to risk the enterprise and family. The Amish won't do that.)

We are also seeing new farmers moving here from states such as Wisconsin. They have family in those states, but they can't afford the startup costs including land. Here they can.

I think land costs are more complicated than you make out.

The services deprecated include davmail, dovecot and postfix. They say the changes are "to focus more on management of computers, devices, and storage."

Care to back up that claim? Can you point/link to research papers that demonstrate the misinterpretation?

Therein lies the problem: the texture of GF breads at room temp. No matter the incantations, or the application of chemical ingredients, no one has conquered the problem of dry, crumbly GF bread. The only solution seems to be the application of heat, whether it be by oven or microwave.

Of course, asking your sandwich vendor to 'wave your sandwich for 45 seconds is to be met with a blank stare.

Any recommendations for a "burner android" phone?

The fdm project is dead. The Sourceforge project page returns 404, and the Github repository hasn't been updated since 2014. (And the Sourceforge mailing list returns 404 as well.)

The code probably works, but don't expect any help or updates.

Not sure if it's as full-featured as Bulk Rename Utility, but it's close. [regex replace is hidden under Advanced & Special, which will tell you a bit about their target market.]

As for the Amish, they're here in NY. Not what you would think. A good start is Amish Society, by Hostetler.

Did you live in Grinnell, or go to the college? If you weren't a student I could understand. If you were a student, why didn't you ask Prof. Andelson? He did his PhD work in the colonies.

The colonies are definitely a good place to visit. Tho' you have to travel a bit further and look carefully to begin to pierce the veil they put up for outsiders. Even then, you are still an outsider.

That has not been my experience with Dell. My new UP2516D kept going black several times a day, with no apparent cause. I couldn't replicate the problem using the laptop with same DP cable, same laptop port on my wife's U2311H.

Dell customer support was hostile from the get-go, claiming "compatibility" problems with my MacBook. Compatibility? What could cause my laptop to be incompatible with the UP25 and yet compatible with the U23? Hogwash.

They finally agreed to exchange the monitor. They sent a refurb.

Since then, I've read multiple stories of people having problems with Dell monitors, using Windows or OS X. A common thread is the DisplayPort connection.

Thanks. I've looked at the AC Lite and the AC PRO also, but haven't narrowed the search for a small box to run the router.

Ummm, no. Irrational tho' it may seem, local, regional and national resistance has made Yucca Mountain untenable. So we're back to dry cask and concrete, which is not a long term solution.

Did it take much effort to adapt the method to writing left-handed? I'm always leery of "writing methods", since so many fall down when attempted with the left hand. (I'm not sure any method would work for me. I was taught to write by right-handed teachers, so I'm an 'over-hand' lefty. I gave up cursive writing in the 5th grade and have 'fast-printed' ever since.)

Do you have hosts you would suggest? There are so many hosts out there, it's hard to know wheat from chaff (to put it politely).
