Months ago -8 was the limit. Really, what's the point in limiting the display to -4 if it's really minus n? Why not just show minus n?

And 1 point is actually zero. Now I'm down to 4, so 15 minus "5" plus 2 = 4 in hackernews math?

For the record, I don't care about karma points, I care about whether or not the system works correctly.

Funny how I had 21 karma points before I posted that comment, which got 4 down votes and another comment got 3 upvotes, but now I have 15 karma points.

How does 21 - 4 + 3 = 15?

1) The students who are currently being misled into believing $125k in debt and a piece of paper are a sure ticket to financial freedom.

2) Startups who want students to eschew school for lower salaries at the startups because they don't have the credentials to get into the Fortune 500.

3) Bitter students who are now $125k in debt with no chance of bankruptcy to alleviate that debt and no job to pay it off, but want an outlet for their frustration and evidence of a community with a common predicament.

4) Community colleges that are cheaper and often provide a better more focused education with smaller class sizes, less elitist student populations, and shorter times to degrees.

5) Students who are well served by attending colleges that aren't filled to the rafters by rich kids who need 4 more years of baby sitting or who go, because well, you are supposed to, meh.

6) A society that is better served by a real focus on the quality of education provided for its citizens who benefit from the products of a well educated work force which is increasingly diverging from useful and practical skills into a grade inflated joy ride through 4 years of drunken debauchery.

I was reading a book about Roads that talks about roads from brazil to the pacific. The author mentions a story about seeing a teen in South America, Venezuela iirc, wearing a t-shirt with bin laden's picture on it and the author asked the kid why he is wearing the shirt.

The teen says, "Because he is a defender of the world's poor."

Is this how people in South America see the war? Rich people killing poor people? Is Bin Laden really revered down there like this? I'm not trying to take sides, just curious about it because I can't even imagine someone wearing a bin laden t-shirt here.

Is bin Laden the new Che in South America?

That is one way to look at it.

Another way would be to create a portfolio. Spend $25/mo or whatever on a web server, build some web apps and put them online for people to see.

How do you feel about working on open source projects for free?

The value of a printer is easy to understand. The value of a programmer with no portfolio is not.

None of these are competitive advantages that are the opposite of the suggestions from the previous post about things that are not competitive advantages.

There are plenty of people who are passionate about their startups, working in a team of talented people, with customers, and insider information.

If a company went to a VC and used these competitive advantages, they'd be shot down in a second. Imagine this scenario:

Hi, I'm jargon. I am really super passionate about this idea and it's in my knowledge domain, because I have retail store. I'm a programmer with a retail store who has this software that I wrote to help me manage my retail store. I got 5 other retail stores on my block to buy it because it is so awesome. No other company is going to be able to compete with it, because all I care about is retail store software. Plus, we got Donald Trump to market it for us!

What VC in their right mind would ever invest in something like that?

So basically, practice makes perfect.
