It works fine for the point that they were making.

Which is that the fact that restaurants have to certify for food safety training and pass regular inspection is perfectly reasonable, and allows those who aren't experts in those areas, or want to continually inspect kitchens to dine out in confidence & conveinience. (or at least vastly reduced risk).

There should be some equivalent, safe, experience in the technology space. Especially given how powerful a tool of liberation it is.

Of course, who controls that, and the ability to turn off those safeguards is important for many many other reasons and... also a question of liberty. And so I think it is a difficult conflict to resolve elegantly.

Well in many countries this is the case.

But it's an interesting thing to raise, because so often when they do enforce those controls - the outcry is 'bank won't let me do what I want with my money!'.

Not such a stones throw from - 'tech company won't let me do what I want with my device!'

Im not making any specific point. But perhaps thats indicative that the solution needs to be holistic, or just that security is hard XD.

This is quite common already, where they’ll offer a higher performance tier, but that power only comes from the engine control unit, no physical differences.

It makes even more sense in EVs where you don’t have to be concerned with the performance of supporting components to the engine.

The difference here, is that it’s a subscription, not a one time upgrade, and as a result, not an upgrade you can sell on.

I’ve been loving zellij.

I don’t know what it is about how my brain works, but I have absolutely no memory for keybinds (and envy those that do), so I love that it just lays them out in the UI.

Only customisation I make is to turn off the borders.

Would love if built a similar, visually guided, experience for nvim.

Interesting. Coming from Spring to Ktor, being able to easily inspect the internal workings has been one of my favourite bits!

It’s ‘advanced’ kotlin in there for sure, and takes some learning of the internal plumbing, but having everything not hidden behind annotations has been great.

Just a CMD+click on whatever Ktor DSL/plugin API your using and you can immediately start to follow along / debug what it’s actually doing.

I’m personally not convinced by the theory of ortho.

It seems to stem from the idea that stagger is a hangover from the typewriter, in which it was required to make room for the mechanics, and that if we didn’t need to make them like that, we wouldn’t have.

Hence the keys should be lined up so your fingers just move up and down.

However I think this has 2 problems.

1) Most ortho keyboards have 5 columns for 4 fingers.

2) In stagger I use different fingers to strike the same letter dependent on what the preceding letter was, so that I almost never use the same finger twice in a row. You can’t do this in ortho if the 2 letters are in the same column, leading to more repeated strikes from the same finger.

Which I would expect is both slower and more straining.

But maybe my technique is weird, or haven’t given the ortho enough time.

Thanks - I figure its step away in terms of target platform.

I meant a little more in the way that software is packaged and run. My understanding is that theres a similar mechanism for storing and linking shared libraries that means multiple versions can go exist and be independently linked depending on the requirements of the calling package.

Is it similar to NixOS? Recent convert, would be interested to read a comparison to fuchsia from someone in the know of both.

If it’s anywhere close Google might be sat on a huge opportunity to tread the same ground while solving the ergonomic issues that NixOS has. (I’ve never been more happy with a distro, but I’ll admit it took me months to crack)

There’s no doubt better docs will help improve the state of Android Apps.

But this is about stemming the flow of shovelware into the store, (todolist tutorial no 800000, but I changed the name) where the problem isn’t that devs lack the tools, it’s that they simply have no serious intention of maintaining their product.

If you can’t find or don’t have enough belief in your own app to find 20 people to download it for free, is it fair to promote it in a way that my gran might come to rely on it.

It’s not nice to be exclusionary, but end users having to pick through that stuff just isn’t great for the platform. There might be a better place for hobby code.

Is there any good data/analysis on how prevalent attacks on these devices are?

I’m always on the fence with this stuff. As an engineer I like having access to my device, and the freedom to tinker.

But on the flip side. It’s obvious to me that these devices that people’s lives revolve around are absolutely critical targets.

Bank accounts, location, 2fa apps/sms, crypto apps, scam calls, literally all the user’s communications are on offer.

Yeah I thought it was an e-ink clock XD.

Then I realised that the Windows 3.1 design language might actually be a really good fit for an OS that targets e-ink for computers & large tablets.

Which is something I’ve been craving a solution to recently.

I agree that you never escape the requirement to have knowledge of how your application is deployed. Things like autoscaling, security, performance etc, all intrinsically effect how you actually write your application.

I think there's a broader point though, in that very often, infra teams will pursue solutions that solve problems in the perspective of their own lens and interests without good oversight from the broader organisation, for developer experience, and economies of scale.

I've seen and worked in environments at both ends of that scale and the gap in dev-ex, and agility as a result can be absolutely staggering.

So often its to avoid 'vendor lock-in', only for infra teams to become the 'vendor', its complex, so they grow by necessity to be expensive, but then still lack the resources to be able provide a clean experience that can be easily migrated off of, resulting in lock-in.

As a dev, the cost isn't my concern, but whats frustrating is knowing that its possible to deploy a new service, with all the bells and whistles, in an hour, and being unable to.

They're trying to leverage the advantages the terminal brings:

- Portable API.

- A directory context, stack based workflow, in which unrelated programs are be executed together.

While working through the major disadvantages 'traditional' terminal apps have:

- Lack of visual hints, memory prompts, discoverability in the UI design.

Those disadvantages aren't a problem for everyone, have stood in awe of many a terminal wizard as they fly through tasks that would take me much longer, terminal or not - and if that's you, you have my envy.

But for me, my brain just isn't wired to be able to quickly recall all the flags, shortcuts, workflows, and other nuances of 30+ terminal apps, of varying usage frequency.

That's why I like k9s as alternative to kubectl, it guides me, reminds me. Could 'k9s' be a native GUI? Of course, but it probably wouldn't exist if it had to be.

So I hope there's room for both!

Do you need memory safety?

I think that’s an unusual way frame that requirement.

All programs need to handle memory _correctly_. Very few seg fault as part of expected operation.

shrug people like looking at colorised photos because it helps root the image within the setting of the real world they occupy.

For some it’s more evocative, irregardless of the absolute accuracy.

Having a professional do it for that picture of your great grandad is expensive.

Having a colourisation subreddit do it is probably worse for accuracy.

I think there is a place for this bullshit.

Coming up to long/medium flights I've often thought, cool - a period of distraction free time, I can read, watch films, write, play video games.

In reality, it always sucks for those things. Crap in seat displays, crook neck on a tablet/book, no comfortable typing position, etc.

I mean it it works, but I wouldn't say its ideal - particularly in cattle class.

So weather this is the solution or not, I don't know, but think theres definitely _something_ in a compact, portable 'Head Up - Hands Down' device form factor.

In reality though, you wouldn’t ‘launder’ money that wasn’t ‘dirty’.

As an activity it’s basically always indicative of a crime. (Wether you agree with the law or not)

And by its very purpose, it makes the ‘base’ crime harder to prosecute and trace.

I think you’ve flipped the causality.

So I don’t think it’s so much that prosecutors just think it’s easier way forward, and if they put their mind to it they could prosecute the base crime, but don’t want to. As much as the laundering activity itself has made it too hard to prosecute.

Have you used Wayland?

If you have an AMD graphics card it’s fairly trivial to switch Pop_OS over.

I found it to be very obviously a clear improvement in app start time and general snappiness in the OS. To extent that meaningfully improved the experience.

Apparently there are gaming benefits too, steamdeck has adopted it for this reason.

Again only going on off hand knowledge. But colour is one of those things that seems straightforward to begin with, and soon becomes insanely complex as you start peeling the layers back XD.

Different files, applications, media can be encoded in different colour spaces, as can different displays, printers, dyeing processes take them as inputs - and the conversion isn't always straight forward.

For most consumption activities this doesn't matter, but if you work in colour and your job is to make sure that that signiture 'Pepsi Blue' is consistent in print media, television advert, merchandise, and the product, some finer treatment of them in the OS becomes necessary.

To iterate - not a colour expert, but I just thought I'd politely enlighten you as why macOS is so highly regarded for this kind of work, it isn't just marketing. Though no doubt, there is plenty of that too.
