when you already have a large percentage of the online user base you are going to have to 1) wait for that underlying user base to grow 2) offer something new to capture people you dont have with your current product

They have reached the point where its a lot easier to lose someone then gain someone. I dont think its societal impact ... its people getting older and dropping off while at the same time its really hard to replenish that use base when already have so many of the young people already on your site.

So maybe they need to understand user rentention vs aging , I think that would be a place to look, societal impact ... no one uses or drops a product becuase of societal impact.

How many diamonds and how many electronics or clothes do we use that have a dubious labor practices. Its the product quality that speaks loudest.

I disagree. I am not responsible for others feelings. There should be clear rules of conduct at any job and a clear process of enforcement. This make the situation fair and certain.

One easy rule is that if someone says "Only talk to me about work." then the other person has to respect it. No forcing of social acceptance , no shaming the other to believe what you believe, just focus on what you were hired for. This is a standard taught to many managers to keep the company out of harassment issues , its very robotic unemotional but its clear and will allow different groups to work together as long as this rule is enforced.

Basically we should not have to worry about a toxic culture because you should not be forced into one when you work. You should just be able to work and separate yourself from your task in any emotional way.

why not just deploy .... the only thing a CI system does is run a bunch of scripts ... build a bash script and deploy by hand.

Theres an 80/20 rule here, you can get 80% of CI features in 20% of the script you create

Also if you turn down your deployment cycle (once a day, twice a week , etc) you will lessen the problem of lack of a tool , until you find one

CI for me has always been about deployment organization and automation. Its ok to have a bug be fixed by end of day, it doesnt have to be deployed in 15 mins.

why did you give them so much money that you are "really worried" dont be irresponsible, its a new venture , dont put in your life savings ... just a couple of dollars , try it out if it doesnt work then at least its not something to be "really worried" about

I gave them money , they gave me coin , everything worked ... maybe you made them angry and tried to do something illegal on their site so they shut your user down.

I hear they prioritize "good" users in their system.

There is a section where there is the type of account you add, if you add a bank account you get special treatment

yep , and super biased pro anything SV. Almost in a way biased liberal but I would say anything pro SV / $$$ is good here. The authentic high quality content has become mainstream. Its turned into poptech.

"wonder what it would look like without them" ... they are following a trend in tech they see, not inventing physics.

Its our phds and universities that prusue the underlying science. Companies make a cost analysis on the RandD and reep the profits ... if it wasnt GM it would be another company, and eventually it will be most companies if the tech proves itself to be as good as the propaganda says.

All in a days work of capitalism , making sure hard work it rewarded and that we keep striving for better

I dont praise GM for their work , I pay them , a fair market price. Thats what they deserve, but they are not gods they are just good engineers and business men doing their jobs and hopefully our schools keep creating them.

its the same thing as "dress for the job want not the job you have" ... or "I think therefore I am"

its a positive mind set.

guys, comeone , this is hacker news ... can you get a point simple point with out over complicating it.

We are supposed to be good engineers here, we are over engineering this idea

we do regard them as a joke, apple is for you non techies that like cool stuff and dont care about being over charged for a metal case .... how many iphone have broken screens.

Apple customers dont care about the tech , they care about cool. This is what Steve Jobs and apple as branded themselves on so thats what you get, cool without good tech. And it wont matter becuase that is not the reason people buy Apple.

Tech community doesnt care about Apple, but the engineers will happily take their money to work on their products. If apple falls programming and computing will go on happily and at least we wont have to build over priced products for a bunch of children to take selfie shots that dont care 2 cents that they have a technical marvel in their hands.

the expertise of their engineers leans that way .... why do we have many techs that can do the same thing? ... engineering is a social science

all you say is correct but im not confused. node and npm is require to run many command line tools (grunt, gulp ...etc). I think this is an unnecessary overhead if we could get these tools to just be built as standalone command line tools and then we can just use bash. Im asking for a particular feature that comes from this environment that I dont have in bash? Why do I need this environment.

I have a sense that webpack is the same, its a bloated environment. I dont need an all in one solution for a build process. Just give me the tools, ill use bash and call it a day. So Im just asking, is there something Im missing? What is the feature from these environments that I can directly preform by calling a script from bash? Why cant we just pull that script out into a command line tool and then devs can use it to their liking, pipe its output to a folder, cat that file to soemthing else, call another tool to minify the results, move all the contents to the dist folder.

Node just doesnt seem to give me any more power as a dev (build wise), why is it so important to the space.

Hats off to frontend engineers, the space has evolved to something respectable but I feel like over engineering is a pursuit of community. Its like they keep making new tools, to encapsulate more features and then post on HN and say "Look at this cool new way to do things that fixes that problem you really didnt have".

No ones webpack was bottlenecking their work, im guessing you can choose what to build and when so you dont have to do a full build every time. No one is going to choose a build system because of its blazing speed. I would rather not have people work on these problems that dont really need to be solved.

Android 8.1 Oreo 9 years ago

Its similar to when blizzard had two games to market "Heros of the Storm" and "Heart of the Swarm" (HOTS). The are taking up more and more of the search space for the phrase "Go" so if they have 10 products that say "go" and a competitor has 1 product then a search might just bump that company away from ever being known and as long as the confusion still takes you to google, google will take that burden.

why are we not just using bash scripts ???

-you can log output -perfectly capable of handling your unique build style -no setup (pretty much) -just call the command lines of other tools like (less.c, yui-compressor.jar ... etc) for compliation tasks

talk about over engineering. The thing is that the reason we dont have 1 to rule them all now is because no one has ever objectively argued why one is better than the other.

If we could just get command line equilvalents for things like ember-cli that didnt require npm then we would be good. Npm is the thing holing us back , we dont need it to do command line processing. Its a bloated middle man. Please command line tool gods , offer your tool outside of the javascript eco system. Build it in java and export to jar or c and allow us to worry about the stitching

Question , what is the thing npm/grunt/gulp gives us that cannot be done with bash, if all the tools we used were command line executables?

many people can have skills to do x but if I cant rely on you to do that for me for the next year at a high quality then I dont want to take the risk.

You are not just a good frontend engineer you are a good frontend engineer that is competing with other good frontend engineers. You lack professionalism (it sounds like) so you lose against those guys.

Good luck, at some point you either find the place that works for you or you learn expand your skills. Seems like you need to improve your tolerence for down time. It could be worse

it ends every time i get out of the car and give my driver 5 stars. And then it begins again with me being picked up damn near any where i want to at any time in the bay area.

The scandals are for the company , the employees , and the gov to figure out.

As a user (and Im also guessing for the drivers) its one of the best companies out there. Reliable , efficient, high quality.

that last one is a feature , that last one is what the company was hoping for when deploying it in your org. Its that feature that makes it actually useful

What good is a messaging app that keeps you from communicating with me. The whole reason we have this app is for us to communicate, quicker and easier.

"Socially unacceptable" ... maybe you are neglecting some important communication? If your answer is no then you should discuss your availability with your team about your slack hours. Its fine to trun off the email and slack. When when you are one work time slack/email make communication better/easier. You should not blame or allow slack to employ a standard you would not be comfortable with even if slack was not invented (ex: your boss calls you at on the phone at 7pm, if thats not ok then you should also tell your boss you dont answer slack after 7pm)

no offline notifications ... just filter it out.

If slack is only used during the work day then you would have the exact same application without the nice CI/file sharing and all the other bots slack has

How would you change the IM client??? Make it like slack. Just use slack.

"Slack for work mostly sucks." ... Whats your point? People use it after work hours?

Slack is not basically an alternative to IRC it IS an alternative, a better more feature rich one.

Slack has more features than IRC so slack sucks ... this typical tradition speak, fearful of new things. Many techies dont need slack but for those that have yet to take on the message app craze Slack is catalyzing a lot of new non techies.

i agree but even a nice thing and a more innovative application of slack is making the anti social become social.

If you dont like seeing people face to face and you still need to communicate with team members slack has the ability to be flexible enough to communicate many different ideas very accurately. With bots and file sharing slack is the one stop collaboration board (along with google docs for co file editing)

and for people that are social or non technical slack has that friendly feeling ... its has taken exactly what we have been hoping from the internet , efficient communication and sharing and made it be homey instead of cold.

Slack is just another message board for tech guys but to the rest of the people tech guys have to communicate with (and would want to make this communication as fast and accurate as possible) slack is a world of difference from other chat services.

They took good tech and added the human touch.

I completely trust Amazon with this product. They have shown the ability to run complex systems at a high quality. I think they can only improve the availability of medicine.

Just because counterfeits still happen doesnt mean they are not trying to stop nor does it mean they are doing a bad job.

And Im sure there will be further regulations around this then there is for nockoff plastic goods.

I would say "useless" is a little harsh. You have to look take up these resources with a goal in mind.

For the most part they are just regurgitating commonsense and nothing is new under the sun as much as SV would want you to think.

If you want to create a health startup it probably better to become a bioscientist instead of an MBA ... unless you are filthy rich already an just need to learn management skills.

But for those that already have the tech skills and need a little guidance on management, marketing, talking to VCs I think the info is good. Just dont expect to understand how to make the next ubiquitous distributed system (amazon ec2) without any systems/programming knowledge.

In fact I think "startup" should be considered a fad that is over. The word holds little meaning and any meaning it had is now over. The money guys are all over the place and the true "startups" already panned all the easy gold from the river.

Startups as they were (if ever) cannot be create now. Now you just have an internet business. And that pretty cool too.

If anyone happens to know a nanotechnologist working out of their garage I would like to speak to them about a startup project
